About The Daily Newspaper
The Morning News is a daily newspaper based in Florence, South Carolina, with a circulation of approximately 35,000 copies. Lee Enterprises is the company that owns it.
It began as the Farmers’ Friend in 1887 and has gone through several mergers and name changes since then. It was initially affiliated with the Democratic Party.
The first edition of the Weekly News and Review was published on March 18, 1922.
The Florence News and Review was its immediate predecessor, and its name was later changed to the Morning News Review. It bought the Florence Daily Times in February 1928 and renamed it the Florence Morning News.
Morning News Dallas
It was renamed the Florence Morning News in 1945. In 1956, then-editor Jack O’Dowd, the newspaper’s publisher’s son, enraged the Ku Klux Klan by supporting the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, and he was chased out of town, eventually landing a job with the Chicago Sun-Times. The Greenwood Index Journal was the only other South Carolina newspaper that took a progressive stance in the 1950s and 1960s. O’Dowd was replaced by James A. Rogers, who, while editorially progressive, took a less confrontational stance. Rogers authored several books about the area and was instrumental in the establishment of Francis Marion College, now Francis Marion University, in 1970. He stepped down as editor in 1975.
In 2000, the newspaper was sold to Media General, and in 2012, it was sold to Berkshire Hathaway.
The Morning News serves as a regional hub for Lee Enterprises’ four weekly newspaper publications: The Hartsville Messenger, The Lake City News and Post, The Marion Star & Mullins Enterprise, and The (Hemingway) Weekly Observer.
The Morning News is available online at scnow.com.
Not only does the Morning News appear on that website, but so do the Hartsville Messenger, Weekly Observer, Lake City News and Post, and Marion Star & Mullins Enterprise. It also housed CBS affiliate WBTW until Media General sold its entire newspaper division to Berkshire Hathaway.
Morning News History
The main printing plant and distribution center for the Dallas Morning News is located in Plano, Texas.
Alfred Horatio Belo founded the Dallas Morning News in 1885 as a spin-off of the Galveston Daily News. The Belo family sold a majority stake in the paper to its longtime publisher, George Dealey, in 1926. By the 1920s, the Dallas Morning News had outgrown the Galveston Daily News and had established itself as a progressive force in Dallas and Texas. Adolph Ochs, who saved the New York Times from bankruptcy in 1896 and turned it into one of the most respected newspapers in the country, stated in 1924 that the Dallas Morning News had had a strong influence on him.
The Dallas Morning News began publishing the Texas Almanac in 1904, after the Galveston Daily News had published it intermittently throughout the 1800s. After more than a century of publication by the Morning News, the assets of the Almanac were donated to the Texas State Historical Association in May 2008.
