About Orange County Register California
The Orange County Register is an American daily newspaper based in Santa Ana, California. The Register had the fifth largest paid daily circulation in California as of 2010, trailing only the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, San Diego Union-Tribune, and Sacramento Bee.
The Register is the flagship publication of Freedom Communications, Inc., which also publishes daily and weekly newspapers and magazines, as well as several related Internet sites.
The Register’s editorial page is notable for its generally conservative and libertarian leanings. It frequently supports Republican politicians and positions, but it is also the country’s largest newspaper, having opposed the Iraq war from the start and opposing laws governing issues such as prostitution and drug use.
It was one of only a few newspapers that spoke out against the internment of Japanese aliens and Japanese-Americans during WWII. The newspaper was a vocal supporter of an anti-communist campaign against the Alaska Mental Health Enabling Act in 1956, claiming that the Act was part of a communist plot to establish concentration camps in Alaska.
History
The Santa Ana Daily Register was founded in 1905 by a consortium and sold to J.P. Baumgartner in 1906 and J. Frank Burke in 1927. The Santa Ana Register was renamed by R.C. Hoiles in 1935, and his holdings were reorganized as Freedom Newspapers, Inc. in 1950. The organization later changed its name to Freedom Communications. In 1952, the paper was renamed The Register.
Circulation increased in tandem with Orange County’s growing population and after The Register added a morning edition in 1959. Clarence Hoiles, Clarence’s son-in-law, was named co-publisher with his brother Harry in 1970 until 1979, when R. David Threshie, Clarence’s son-in-law, took over.
Faced with the Los Angeles Times’ aggressive push into the county under then-publisher Otis Chandler, Threshie hired 30-year-old editor N. Christian Anderson III to boost the paper’s professionalism. Political stances were limited to the editorial page. The paper began publishing in full color in 1981.
