History
The San Antonio Express, a weekly tabloid-style newspaper, debuted in 1865 as a weekly tabloid-style newspaper. At the time, the city already had a number of other newspapers in a variety of languages. All of the other newspapers, however, went out of business, leaving only the Express to serve the city.
The Express transitioned from a weekly paper to a daily newspaper in December 1866, and by the early 1870s, it had grown into a full-fledged newspaper. The Express’s early days were marked by several leadership changes that nearly doomed the paper until 1875, when a brand new company, the Express Printing Company, took control. In 1878, The Express became a daily morning newspaper.
A. W. Gifford and J. P. Newcomb, who had been an early investor in the Express, launched a new rival newspaper, the Evening Light, in January 1881. [6] The Evening Light, as opposed to the Express, was published in the afternoon. The Express editors initially chose to ignore the upstart paper, but the Light quickly grew in popularity at the turn of the twentieth century. The Daily Light was sold to E. B. Chandler in 1906, and the Daily Light Publishing Company purchased the San Antonio Gazette in 1909. The paper was known as the Light and Gazette from then until 1911. Edward S. O’Reilly, also known as Tex, was the managing editor at one point.
