About South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The Sun Sentinel is the primary daily newspaper for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as well as neighboring Broward County and southern Palm Beach County. It is often referred to as the South Florida Sun Sentinel and was once known as the Sun-Sentinel until 2008. The South Florida region’s three counties are all covered by it. The newspaper has the biggest circulation in the region.

Since November 2020, Paul Pham has served as general manager, and Julie Anderson has served as editor-in-chief since February 2018.

Up until a makeover and rebranding on August 17, 2008, the newspaper’s name had been the Sun-Sentinel with a hyphen. The newspaper’s flag’s new design likewise eliminated the space between “Sun” and “Sentinel,” but left the space in the name.

Tribune Publishing, The Sun Sentinel’s parent company, is the owner. In May 2021, Alden Global Capital purchased this business. Alden Global Capital manages its media businesses through Digital First Media.

History of South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The Fort Lauderdale Weekly Herald, very first known newspaper in the Fort Lauderdale region, and the Everglades Breeze, a domestically printed publication established in 1910 and 1911, respectively, are the sources of the Sun Sentinel’s history. The Everglades Breeze changed its name to the Sentinel in 1925. The Sentinel and the Herald were combined as the Daily News and Evening Sentinel the same year after being purchased by two Ohio proprietors. Horace and Tom Stillwell bought the newspaper in 1926. However, the 1926 Miami hurricane’s devastation led to a decline in circulation, and in 1929, Tom Stillwell sold the publication to the R.H. Gore Sr.-led Gore Publishing Company. The Daily News and Evening Sentinel’s readership reached 10,000 by 1945.

The newspaper was renamed the Fort Lauderdale News in 1953 by Gore Publishing, who also established a Sunday morning edition. Gore Publishing bought the weekly Pompano Beach Sun in 1960 when it had a circulation of 60,000 and turned it into a six-day morning paper, the Pompano Sun-Sentinel—reviving the “Sentinel” brand it had dropped seven years previously. The Tribune Company bought Gore Publishing in 1963. The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel became the name of the morning publication in the 1970s. The editorial staffs of the two papers were combined in 1982. After then, the two publications united to form the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, a single morning publication. The newspaper changed its name to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in 2000 after broadening its coverage.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel Controversies

A Bloomberg L.P. employee noticed a six-year-old Chicago Tribune item about United Airlines’ bankruptcy filing in 2002 placed on the Sun Sentinel’s website in September 2008 and believed it to be a recent news because of the display’s fuzziness. The employee afterwards added it to Bloomberg Terminals as a headline. Later, the article also appeared on the home page of Google News. United Airlines shares was heavily sold off as a result, and its share price briefly plunged “from $12 to $3 before trading was paused.” The SEC formally opened a “preliminary investigation” into the situation a few days later.

Due to a lack of data protection compliance, the Sun Sentinel has been blocking access to its website in the European Union since 2018.

Overview of the Sun-Sentinel

For many years, the Sun Sentinel focused on Broward County while giving Palm Beach County just scant news coverage. However, it began to encompass all of South Florida, including Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, in the late 1990s. The Miami Herald serves as its main rival in Miami, while The Palm Beach Post serves as its main rival in Palm Beach County.

In 2013, the newspaper won its first Pulitzer Prize in the Public Service Journalism category for an investigative series about off-duty police officers who frequently drive recklessly.

A second Pulitzer Prize for public service was awarded to the newspaper in 2019 for its coverage of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 17 people. The Sun Sentinel was praised for “exposing errors by school and law enforcement officials before and after the tragic shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School” by the Pulitzer committee.

Additionally, the publication has been a Pulitzer Prize nominee 13 times, including for its coverage of Storm Wilma in 2005 and an inquiry into the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s improper handling of hurricane aid.

The Sun Sentinel website features news videos from two South Florida television stations: WSFL-TV, a previous sister station of WPEC before Tribune’s publishing and broadcasting operations were divided, and WPEC, a CBS affiliate in West Palm Beach. In addition, it produces a weekly in Spanish called El Sentinel and a number of neighborhood magazines.
