About Sun Baltimore

The morning newspaper published in Baltimore has long been regarded as one of the most influential dailies in the United States. A.S. Abell founded it as a four-page tabloid in Baltimore in 1837. Abell dedicated The Sun to printing the news without regard to its editors’ prejudices, and its circulation surpassed 12,000 within a year. It began as a penny paper aimed at a broad audience, but as it grew, The Sun became more focused on a serious, intellectual, and issue-oriented readership. It grew slowly but steadily as Abell rejected the conventional wisdom that a newspaper should be a mouthpiece for a political party and instead pursued an independent political line.

The Sun has excelled at covering national and international news for much of its history while putting less emphasis on local news. The Sun established an outstanding record in covering the Mexican War of 1846-48, reporting the fall of Vera Cruz (1847) before official word reached the US government. During the American Civil War, The Sun’s editors used their discretion to avoid being shut down by Union censors.

After Abell died in 1888, his three sons took over the paper and continued the founder’s legacy. The Sunday Sun debuted in 1901 and was taken over as editor by the astute and acerbic H.L. Mencken in 1906. The Evening Sun arose from the purchase of the Baltimore World in 1910. The Sun newspapers have always provided excellent wartime coverage, particularly during WWII. In 1986, the Times Mirror Company purchased the Sun newspapers and their corporate owner, the A.S. Abell Company. The Baltimore Sun became a subsidiary of the Tribune Company after the Times Mirror merged with it in 2000.

The Sun was founded on May 17, 1837, by printer/editor/publisher/owner Arunah Shepherdson Abell (often spelled “A. S. Abell”) and two associates, William Moseley Swain and Azariah H. Simmons, who had recently moved from Philadelphia, where they had started and published the Public Ledger the previous year. Abell was born in Rhode Island and worked as a journalist for the Providence Patriot before moving on to New York City and Boston.

The Sun was owned by the Abell family and descendants until 1910 when the local Black and Garrett families invested in the paper at the suggestion of former rival owner/publisher of The News, Charles H. Grasty, and they, along with Grasty, gained a controlling interest; the parent publishing company was still known as the A. S. Abell Company.

Our goal will be the common good, regardless of sects, factions, or political parties, and we will work without fear or favor. This paper will be published for at least one year, and the publishers hope to receive it, as they will try to deserve generous support.
