The Lions’ first defeat of the year came against Athletic Club. They lost 0-1 to RCD Espanyol at the Home ground. Martin Braithwaite’s 83rd-minute goal gave the Catalans the victory. Although Athletic had better opportunities and generally was in charge of the game.
The Lions got off to a great start using the same starting lineup that was victorious against Cadiz (4 0). Just five minutes had passed when Alex Berenguer was in space by center-back Yeray after the winger failed to outmuscle Alvaro Fernandez.
The sole opportunity for the visitors in the first half was wasted by Joselu. It happened after a cross from Sergi Darder came in. In the last moments, Athletic would again pose a threat twice. A low cross from Berenguer was just millimeters close from being slid in by Iaki Williams. And just before halftime, the winger, who had been set up by an Iker Muniain free-kick, slammed a shot against the crossbar.
The contest became a tactical struggle after the restart. The sunny weather condition, made the game more difficult for both players and spectators.
For the majority of the second half, Los Leones had their advantage in possession. Braithwaite’s goal in the 83rd minute against the flow of play came in from an unfortunate mix-up at the back.
A header in extra time as Yeray came close to tying the score. The Lions never gave up, and our cheering supporters did the same. High fives all around and it’s time to concentrate on the forthcoming trip to Elche.
Ane Elexpuru, Clara Pinedo, Maite Zubieta, and Amaia Martnez, are four of our young Lionesses. They were given a standing ovation before the game in honor of winning the world U-20 and European U-19 championships.
