Bayelsa United Won Nasarawa United to lift 2021 Aiteo Cup (NNL),
The Yenagoa-based club became the first team from the second division to lift the prestigious trophy since Dolphins FC made an appearance 20 years ago.
Nigeria’s Bayelsa United football team has won the 2021 Aiteo Cup after defeating Nasarawa United of the NPFL on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the end of the season.
After losing their qualifying for the upcoming continental tournament, Nasarawa United – who finished fourth in the Nigerian top flight – focused on Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Sunday.
However, the strong swimmers could not beat Bayelsa United who got the final qualifying ticket for the Caf Confederation Cup coming in a 4-3 victory on penalties.
It was the first 45 minutes of interest in Benin as the two teams spotted the net twice before the break.
Yenagoa uniforms opened the scoring through Inikurogha Okardi in the 19th minute. The lead was short-lived as Nasarawa responded within minutes by Chinedu Ohanachom’s plan.
At half-time, Aliyu Abdullahi teamed up with Silas Nwankwo to put Solid Miners ahead of their second goal but in the 36th minute, Bayelsa United responded.
He ended 2-2 in the first half and both sides struggled to hold on to the winning goal after a rematch in extra time before the match began in a tackle.
Bayelsa United were the second NNL club to win the Federation Cup after Dolphins FC defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 2-0, in 2001.
Their success earned them a cash prize of N25 million while Nasarawa United received a cash prize of N10 million for finishing second.
Prior to the tournament in Benin, the last four Aiteo Cup matches had been won on penalties by the Kano Pillars in the previous tournament in 2019 after beating the Niger Tornadoes 1-0.

The Queens defeated FC Robo 4-2 at the same venue in Edo State before their men took the lead after 120 minutes.
Bayelsa Queens’ Mary Anjor is an expert in women’s sports, and also won the Best Actress award. In the men’s competition, Top Scorer award went to Gafaar Olafimihan of 3SC while Nasarawa United goalkeeper Mohammed Galadima won the Most Valuable Player award.
