All through there st stay in the league, they never came below fifth place. They stayed in the league for seasons. Bologna was in the Northern League before all football leagues were suspended for World War 1.

Champions: 1920s and 1930s

Bologna became more successful after the first World War. In the 1919-20 season, they reached the semi-finals of the Northern Italian competition and reached the finals in the following season. However, in 1923-24, they were runner ups to Genoa in the National Champions League. They went down 2-1 which was also their score against Pro Vercelli in the Northern League finals.

The new beginning

For the first time in 1924-25, Bologna became champions after having defeated Genoa. They fought in five very difficult final matches to win that cup. A few seasons later, they won the championship title again for the second time. This gave them a. Foothold in Italian football and buy them a legacy. However, this was the last time the league was played in the old system. Subsequently, Serie A began the following year.

1936-37 Italian champion Bologna

Before World War II, Bologna won the title four more times in 1935-36,1936-37,1938-39, and 1940-41.

After world war II

The club was less successful after world war II. The club was generally around fourth, fifth and sixth positions in the league in the 1950s and 1960s. They eventually took the league back in 1963-64. That was their last Serie A match of all time bringing the total for the club to 7. Bologna qualified for the European Cup in 1964-65. They however lost in the preliminary round against Anderlecht. The European cup of that time is today’s UEFA Champions League.

They however won the Italian cup in 1970 against Palermo. The game was quiet though and ended in a draw. Bologna won in A penalty shoot out.

Climbing down and back up the leagues.

From the beginning of the 1981-82 season, the club began to go down. They first reduced to Serie B from Serie A after a serious battle with Genoa and Cagliari. Afterwards, they were relegated down to Serie C1 in quick succession. The next year, they won their way out of Serie C into Serie B. They were in Serie B for years before eventually returning to Serie A in the 1988-99 season.

Relegation and after wins

Their joy was however short-lived as they were relegated back in 1991. Hitherto in 1993 they moved back down to Serie C1. They remained that till 1996 when they moved back to Serie A.

Bologna competed in the European Stage two years later and won the UEFA Intertoto Cup. They also played in the UEFA Cup. The club remained in the top flight until they lost to Parma during playoffs in the 2004-05 campaign.

Serie B

Bologna prepared to strongly challenge for promotion from Serie B although they lost some key players in the 2005-06 campaign. However they still had A poor start in the season and as a result, Renzo Ulivieri, an experienced coach was sacked. He was replaced by Andrea Mandorlini, a former Internazionale defender.

Change of ownership in Serie B

During this period, a local entrepreneur, Alfredo Cazzola bought the team from Giuseppe Gazzoni Frascara. Mandolin was not able to bring the club back to its past glory either so he was sacked and Ulivieri was brought back. Bologna was in 8th place at the end of the 2005-06 Serie B campaign. Serie A

Gazzola and an American Consortium agreed during the 2008 summer for the latter to take over the club. This agreement fell through as a result of disagreements between both parties. The club was then successively sold to a local manager, Francesca Menarini who became the second female chairman in the whole of Serie A. The start of the season was impressive with Arrigoni as the head coach.

They competed against Milan at San Siro Stadium and won 2-1 thanks to a winning goal by Francesco Valiani. In the following weeks, Bologna lost 8 out of 9 matches. The management sacked Arrigoni after a disappointing loss in a match against Cagliari. They appointed Sinisa Mihajivolic as the new Rosso Blu boss.

Bologna has relegated again to Serie B in the 2013-14 season. This made all the financial problems faced by the club and its ownership more visible. The fans seriously criticized Albano for selling the star player Alessandro Diamante to a Chinese club known as Guangzhou Evergrande. Diego Lopez, former Cagliari boss was then the new coach. Meanwhile, Albano announced his intention to give out his shares to a new owner.

The making of the new Chairman

Several people declared interest in acquiring the club among which was A North American group led by Joe Tacopina and Joey Saputo. They are the owners of FC Montreal which was the team of former Bologna hero, Marco Di Vaio. Zanetti Massimo, the former Chairman also made known his interest.

On 15, October 2014, the board of directors eventually made Tacopina the new club chairman.

The Consortium “BFC 1909 Lux Spv”
