Brief history of Boston Globe

Six businessmen from Boston, Massachusetts, invested $150,000 to launch The Boston Globe for the first time in 1872. Eben Jordan, one of these investors, employed Charles H. Taylor, a 27-year-old Civil War veteran, and Boston Traveler employee, as a temporary business manager in 1873 because the publication was having financial difficulties.

Taylor was successful in increasing the paper’s financial stability, and as a result, he and Jordan were made full partners. However, the newspaper, which was first published as a morning daily, increased in size by adding a Sunday edition in 1877. And an evening edition is known as The Boston Evening Globe in 1878.

The Boston Globe was acquired by Affiliated Publications in 1973, changing its status from a privately held corporation to that of a subsidiary. Due to William O. Taylor’s position as Chairman and CEO of Affiliated, the Taylor family, who had maintained ownership of The Boston Globe since Charles Taylor became publisher, continued to have control over the publication.

The Boston Globe was no longer owned by the Taylor family after more than 120 years. This was when the New York Times Company, or Times Co., paid $1.1 billion for it in 1993. Also, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette claims that at the time, it was the biggest newspaper sale ever done in the United States. Furthermore, John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, bought The Boston Globe in 2013. [Boston Globe Media, which publishes The Boston Globe, is its parent company.
