Jakob Poeltl Career

Early years

Vienna, Austria, is where Poeltl was born. His parents had both also played volleyball for the Austrian national teams. Because a youth basketball program was located close to his Vienna-area house when he was a youngster, his parents decided to have their son play basketball. The Vienna DC Timberwolves’ youth league featured him for seven years. In 2013–14, he then participated in one season with the Austrian Bundesliga’s Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions.

College recruitment

Prior to the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, Poeltl was hardly recognized in the US. Andy Hill, an assistant coach at the University of Utah, traveled to the tournament in Macedonia (now North Macedonia) primarily to evaluate possible players from other countries. He only saw Austria’s first match against the Netherlands because he pledged to see all 38 teams live. Poeltl’s performance, which included 15 rebounds, prompted Hill to inquire about his interest in playing collegiate basketball in the US. Despite Austria losing 1-6 and finishing 20th out of 22 teams in the lower level Division B, he went on to average a double-double in points and rebounds during the tournament and was nominated to the second all-tournament team.

Jakob Poeltl then attracted the attention of several NCAA Division I teams, which compelled him to choose between a professional future and a collegiate education in the United States.

Due in large part to his connection with Utah’s coaching staff, Poeltl then decided to play collegiate basketball there in 2014. In order to personally recruit him, three Division I head coaches and two assistant coaches traveled to Vienna. Larry Krystkowiak, the head coach of Utah, made the journey of more than 5,000 miles (8,000 km) twice. Poeltl found it admirable that Krystkowiak took the time to come see him in person. He also found it interesting that the 6-foot-10-inch (2.08 m) coach had experience coaching young big players and had been an NBA power forward player.

College career

In his first season as a starter, Jakob Poeltl had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his first contest. He was included on the 35-man midseason shortlist for the Naismith Trophy during his second season in 2015–16 on February 11. Pöltl was then selected the Pac-12 Player of the Year and to the All-Pac-12 First Team on March 7, 2016. Later, he was selected as the recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as well as the Pete Newell Big Man Award.
Poeltl gave notice of his NBA draft intent on April 13, 2016, foregoing his remaining two years of collegiate eligibility.
