Lubin is home to the Polish professional football team Zagłębie Lubin S.A. (pronounced zaˈɡwɛmbjɛ ˈlubin). The club, OMTUR Lubin, was established in 1945 and plays in the Ekstraklasa at the time.
Background
Zagłębie Lubin’s history began in August 1945, when the former German town of Luben was transformed into Polish Lubin (see Recovered Territories). Several football fans, including Pogon Lwów players and administrators, were among a group of ethnic Poles who were compelled to leave their homes in old Eastern Poland. Some of them belonged to the Organization of Workers’ Universities’ Socialist Youth Organization (Organizacja Mlodziezy Towarzystwa Uniwersytetow Robotniczych, OMTUR), which existed before to 1939. They established the OMTUR Lubin football team in August 1945. The squad played its games on a former German field on Kosciuszko Street.
