About Finn Harps F.C.

As of 2020, the Irish football team Finn Harps Football Club (Cumann Peile Chláirsigh na Finne) competes in the League of Ireland’s Premier Division. The team became established in 1954 and admitted into the league in 1969. Technically, it became established on November 30, 1953. They play their home games at Finn Park in Ballybofey, County Donegal, where they were born and raised. Blue and white are the club’s official colors, and they go by the moniker Harps. The club’s two biggest victories were the First Division championship in 2004 and the FAI Cup victory in 1973–74. They also competed in the 1999 FAI Cup Final(s), which saw two replays after the first one finished in a stalemate with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Derry City and Finn Harps compete in the Northwest Derby together, and they have a local rivalry.

History

Initial years

Finn Harps began as a junior club in 1954. The name of the club is a combination of the harp, a traditional Irish emblem, and the River Finn, which flows through Ballybofey. They initially gained widespread recognition when they won the 1968 FAI Junior Cup. As a result, they were eligible to participate in the 1969 FAI Intermediate Cup. Fran Fields and Patsy McGowan, the club directors, made the decision to seek for membership in the League of Ireland after being eliminated from that tournament. The club became accepted into the senior levels in May 1969, and on August 17, 1969, they played their first senior match against Shamrock Rovers. They lost 10-2. After early concerns that the club’s standards were insufficient, the club grew significantly throughout the 1970s.

The 1970s were a decade of domination.

In 1971–1972, Finn Harps overcame Cork Hibernians at Dalymount Park thanks to a goal from club icon and League of Ireland record scorer Brendan Bradley, and went on to win their first senior trophy, the Dublin City Cup. This was noteworthy since before, many had brushed off the notion of having Finn Harps play in the league. Two years later, the club’s first and only FAI Cup victory happened at Dalymount Park once again.

Ollie Horgan, a Galway native and former Fanad United manager, became chosen as the club’s 2014 manager on November 25, 2013.

More Information

In his debut season in command, Horgan guided the team to its first FAI Cup semifinal appearance in 15 years before losing at Richmond Park to Premier Division team St. Patrick’s Athletic. In a well-known relegation/promotion playoff, in which they played the second leg on November 6, 2015, Finn Harps won 2-1 on aggregate to secure promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division for the 2015 season.  Despite all odds, Horgan kept Finn Harps in the Premier Division in 2016, however in their second season back there, they were once again demoted. They spent 2018 in the First Division and became immediately promoted, this time on the strength of a 3-0 aggregate score and once again at Limerick’s cost in the relegation/promotion play-off.

Another relegation struggle occurred in 2019, and Harps prevailed against Drogheda United to secure their place in the Premier Division for the 2020 season.

Thanks to Adam Foley, the 2021 season got off to a winning start against Bohemians. Finn Harps would defeat Derry City for the first time ever on the road in league play in May 2021.
