Aguirre was officially appointed as the new manager of the Mexico national team on 3 April 2009. He replaced Sven-Göran Eriksson. The Fifth Gold Title

He led Mexico to its fifth Gold Cup title and its first victory over the United States outside of Mexico since 1999 on 26 July 2009. On 12 August 2099, he led Mexico to a comeback win over the same opposition at the Estadio Azteca. He further put Mexico closer to World Cup qualification by winning 3–0 in Costa Rica. Mexico beat El Salvador in the Estadio Azteca 4–1, qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on 10 October 2009.

Aguirre was named as the new manager of the Japan national team in August 2014. The subsidiary year has been perfect. Apart from the disappointment that the players have suffered when they can not get the promotion to Segunda B. However, they proclaimed Pepe Gálvez’s team, champions of the third most competitive Balearic division in recent times. They won it with record numbers and without giving up a single point at home.  Mallorca B has shown significant progress in the game, being the youngest team in the group. The style they play has made it one of the most powerful branches of the national scene. It has marked the path to victory with youths full of talents.

They recognized Youth A as one of the great teams of the Division of Honor for yet another season. The team competed for the classification in the cup of the king until the last moment. They ranked third ahead of historical teams such as RCD Espanyol or Girona.
