About The OGC Nice Fc
The full name of OGC Nice is Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Côte d’Azur. Most people prefer to call it OGC Nice or just Nice. Marquis de Massingy d’Auzac created this club in 1904 and it dwells in the Ligue 1. Meanwhile, it stands as one of the pioneer clubs of the league. The Allianz Riviera is its dwelling ground for home matches. Initially, they bore the name “Gymnaste Club”. Also, they are based on gymnastics and athletics. The division of the club came in 1908 due to the quest to retain the link with FSAM and be part of USFSA. Now, the newly created portion bore the name Gymnastes Amateurs Club de Nice.
A football club emerged from the new division, but after two seasons, they came back together. In 1919, Gallia Football Athlétic Club joined the club. Then, the club started playing for the Ligue du Sud-Est, which the French Football Federation controlled. Then, the club’s biggest opponents were Cannes and Marseille. However, the club adopted a new name on 22 December 1924. They chose the name Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice.
In July 1930, French football witnessed a professional level in their league. Nice and other associate clubs were the pioneers of the new development. However, the initial performance of Nice in the league wasn’t good. They were relegated in the second season. Consequently, they played in division two till 1939. That was the year, they scraped out professional football in France. Nice now played in Ligue du Sud-Est and Ligue du Sud.
In no distant time, Nice came back to the professional level, settling in division two. Then, in the 1948-49 season, they went up to division one. At that time, Anton Marek was the manager. Subsequently, Jean Lardi took over. It was in his regime that the club won its first league title in the 1950-51 season. The league ended, with Nice having the same points but a different number of wins from Lille. After Numa Andoire took over as the club manager, Nice went on to win the double winning the league and the Coupe de France.
The scalability of nice continued as they won more trophies, especially the Coupe de France. Subsequently, Just Fontaine took over as the manager. Then Carniglia replaced him. He had a good managerial season, as his side won the league title ahead of tough league opponents. In 1959, they won the title again. Within 1950-59, the club recorded 4 league titles and 2 Coupe de France trophies. In the new decade, things weren’t very smooth again for Nice. Consequently, they were relegated at some point.
The best result for Nice after winning the title in 1959 was a second-place finish. achieved a second-place finish in the league, its best finish since winning the league in 1959. For over three seasons, Nice stayed in the second division. However, after coming up to the first division in 1985, they went back to the second division. They got into division one in 1997 and won the Coupe de France trophy. Then, relegated again to division two.
In the 2001-02 season, Nice came back to the Ligue 1. But, they were behind in reaching the financial requirements of DNCG. This led to their demotion to the Championnat National, which is the third tier of French football. They had to take calculative measures to ensure their return to the Ligue 1. In the 2005-06 season, Nice had the chance to win the Coupe de la Ligue. But, they lost it to Nancy.
The Possession Of The Club
A merger between Chien Lee and Alex Zheng led to the possession of a greater percentage of the club. Then, in the 2016-17 season, Nice qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Patrick Vieira came as a new manager in 2018. However, he had a fair managerial tenure. Then, Jim Ratcliffe came into the club’s ownership picture, buying it for €100 million. On the other hand, the club ended Vieira’s managerial contract due to poor performance. Then, Adrian Ursea took over as the caretaker. This lasted till 28 June 2021, when the club now appointed Christopher Galtier as the new manager.
The Football Ground Of OGC Nice
The pioneer football ground of Nice is the Stade Municipal du Ray. Officially, they know it as Stade Léo-Lagrange. From time to time, they renovate and redevelop the stadium. Now, it has a capacity of 17,415. However, prior to this time, fans normal stay in the center of the city. In 2002, when the club wanted to erect a stadium, it received a lot of criticism from domestic politicians. Despite this, the club went on with the plan. The Tribunal administration of Nice put a stop to the project for certain reasons. But, the emergence of a new deputy mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, facilitated the completion of the project. It was set by September 2013.
Impressively, the French Football Federation (FFF) selected the stadium to be amongst those that will host the UEFA Euro 2016. They named it Allianz Riviera and Stade de Nice. It has various sections for other sports other than football. On the Rugby side, Toulon also makes use of it. Meanwhile, it can contain up to 36,178 people. OGC Nice and Valenciennes played the commissioning match.
Things didn’t really go as planned, as the stadium was meant to be done by 2007. But, due to some financial instability, they paused the construction. The stadium was originally planned to be completed by 2007. However, construction was halted the previous year because of concerns related to the future cost of the structure. Saint-Isidore near the Var was the location of the stadium. Remarkably, it hosted six matches at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Current Owner Of OGC Nice Fc
The owner of the club is the Ineos Group Ltd. Apparently, it is a British establishment that deals with chemicals. It is a big company that is recognized around the world. On the other hand, they strategically organized their different units to have a coordinator. Sir Jim Ratchliffe is the founder of this establishment. He previously named the company Inspec Ethylene Oxide and Specialities.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe created Inspec in 1992. In 1995, Jim purchased BP’s ethylene oxide and glycol to merge with Inspec. Then, in 1998, he created Ineos to buy Inspec’s ethylene oxide facility. Everything amounted to £84 million.
The Scottish investment house Murray Johnstone (£10 million), Ineos management (£1.5 million), and the investment bank BT Alex Brown (£72.5 million, raised through junk bonds) funded this. Impressively, the company became scalable. Ineos possessed 22 companies between 1998 and 2008. Then, between 2008 and 2010, the company focused on the worldwide recession. Consequently, they had low sales and feared entering bankruptcy. But, luckily, they survived it.
2011 had to do with the merging of ventures for the growth of the company. Petroineos is an establishment from the combination of Ineos and PetroChina. Then, in June, Ineos and BASF merged to form Styrolution. Also, Ineos and Solvay merged. Ineos’s heritage is in a number of well-known blue-chip chemical companies. These include Amoco, BASF, Bayer, Borealis, BP, Degussa, Dow Chemical Company, Enichem, Erdölchemie, Hoechst, ICI, Innovene, Lanxess, Monsanto, Norsk Hydro, and Solvay. They formed the company in 1998. Then, it has bought other businesses.
In October 2005, Ineos made a proposal to buy Innovene, BP’s olefins, and derivatives and refining subsidiary. The deal benefited Ineos very well. Ineos’ partnership continued with Lanxess. Then, in February 2011, Ineos Bio kept developing and producing more numbers of products. On the other hand, Ineos Bio declared that the Florida plant is producing cellulosic ethanol on a commercial scale. Interestingly, there are claims of Ineos Bio being the first to practice that with this new technology.
Ineos closed its petrochemical plant located in Scotland, on 23 October 2013. In short, Ineos made other business alignments, establishments, and sales development. It even made a couple of donations to some institutions like Oxford University. Ineos made this donation for the development of a new research institute that will tackle antibiotic resistance.
