Shanghai Port F.C.
Shanghai Port FC is a professional football team that competes in the Chinese Super League. It was formerly known as Shanghai SIPG. They are also authorized to compete by the Chinese Football Association (CFA).
The group is situated in Shanghai’s Pudong district. However, they play at the Pudong Football Stadium, which can accommodate 37,000 spectators. Shanghai International Port Group, a Chinese company owns it (SIPG).

Shanghai East Asia FC
Former Chinese international footballer Xu Genbao created the club on December 25, 2005, under the name Shanghai East Asia FC. However, the Genbao Football Base, another football institution built by Xu, employed its former students as players.
In the 2006 league season, these graduates however established their first team as they also made their professional football league debut in China’s third tier.
In the 2018 Chinese Super League season, they made it to the top flight and won the league for the first time.
The Club’s Value
Shanghai Port FC was the third-most valued football club in China, according to a Forbes study from 2015. Thus they had an estimated $37 million in income and a club value of $159 million.

History of the Club
League Two: 2005-2007
96 academy members born between 1988 and 1991 were enrolled on May 16, 2000. This was the day Xu Genbao also established the Genbao Football Base.
In 2005, Xu Genbao established the Shanghai East Asia Football Club. A professional team for young Chinese athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 also existed there. Shanghai East Asia participated in China League Two in 2006.
The youngest Chinese goal scorer, Cao Yunding, was 16 years and 242 days old. However Wu Lei, who is only 14 years and 287 days old, is the youngest Chinese professional football player.
The turnaround
As the squad manager, Xu chose French young coach Claude Lowitz from the Base. The third-tier Chinese league system’s China League Two was thus where the team competed.
Claude Lowitz however left the club at the conclusion of 2006. Jiang Bingyao, a former assistant manager, was promoted to manager as a result.
Also the young East Asia FC went on to win the division title in 2007 after learning from and gaining experience from their debutante season. Thus receiving a promotion to China League One, the football league’s second division.
League One: 2008–2012
Despite the promotion’s success, concerns about the team’s future surfaced. This was due to the fact that Xu’s prior attempts to establish a professional club ultimately resulted in the sale of said efforts to Shanghai Shenhua in 2002 as a result of financial issues.

Better Management
A self-appointed manager, Xu Genbao guided the men’s football squad to victory as well as the gold medal.
Former Chinese League fan Zhiyi was given his first management position at the club for the 2010–11 league season. Additionally, Nikola Karçev and Fabrice Nol were introduced as the team’s first-ever international players.

Shanghai East Asia once more changed its first team name to Port Shanghai F.C. on December 28, 2012. This was done as part of a sponsorship contract worth 40 million Yuan with Shanghai International Port.
On January 7, 2013, the club formally bought Shanghai Zobon, another Shanghai-based football team, during the off-season. Before being disbanded, they had competed in the 2012 China League Two-tier.
Shanghai SIPG was formally taken over by the Shanghai International Port in November 2014. The youthful players joined the backup squad. They won their first three games of the season under Sven-Göran Eriksson’s leadership.

Registration Restriction
In the summer transfer window, the squad acquired Ghanaian player Asamoah Gyan. Eight players received 50 million Yuan from them. The Chinese player with the highest transfer total is this one.
Due to the registration restriction in place at the time, Jean Evrard Kouassi was sent to the reserve team. With 65 points, Shanghai SIPG took second place at the end of the regular season. It was the highest league place they had ever held for the team. They were successful in qualifying for the AFC Champions League.
Transfer Windows
Shanghai SIPG spent €56 million to bring in the Brazilian international Hulk during the summer transfer window. The club finished third in the CSL with 52 points after being defeated in the quarterfinals of the ACL.
Shanghai won its first CSL championship in 2018 thanks to Wu Lei, who was the league’s leading scorer that year. They won the Super Cup in 2019, their second-highest-level trophy.
Shanghai Port F.C. Stadium
Shanghai, China’s Pudong Football Stadium is now known as the SAIC Motor Pudong Arena due to sponsorship issues. It will be finished in October 2020 and served as Shanghai Port’s home stadium in the Chinese Super League. There are 37,000 seats available in the stadium.
Construction
According to the building blueprints created by HPP Architekten, construction began on April 28, 2018. The stadium’s white metal facade is meant to resemble a bowl made of Chinese porcelain.
Events
The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be held in China, it was confirmed on June 4, 2019. Later, it was revealed that the venue will host both the final and one semifinal.
The arena hosted the last game of 2020 on October 31, 2020.
Shanghai Port F.C.: The Manager
On February 7, 1978, Ivan Leko was born. He is now in charge of the Chinese Super League team Shanghai Port and is a professional football manager from Croatia.
A career in a Club
Leko’s career began with the Hajduk Split team in his hometown. He played there for a number of seasons before joining Málaga CF in Spain. He was loaned to HNK Trogir during his early senior year.
Leko returned to Hajduk in January 2005 for a brief period before joining Club Brugge in the summer. He made the decision to sign a deal with K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot on January 15, 2009. However He continued his career at K.S.C. Lokeren after his stint with the Antwerp side.
International Career
For the Croatian national football team, Leko made 13 appearances. In addition, he received a call-up to the team for the 2006 World Cup. He did not participate in the competition, though, as Croatia was eliminated in the group round.
Career in Management
With Oud-Heverlee Leuven, Leko made his managerial debut in 2014, but he only held the position for one season.
He joined the coaching staff of Croatian manager Igor Tudor in 2015 and is now also the assistant manager of the Greek team PAOK FC. But in 2016, he was fired.
Leko managed Sint-Truidense V.V. for one season in 2016–17, and Club Brugge for the following two seasons in 2017–18 and 2018–19. In his first year in Brugge, he celebrated the Jupiler Pro League as well as Belgian Super Cup.
Awards and Split up
Leko also received the Professional Manager of the Year award. He was questioned by Belgian police in October 2018 as part of a corruption probe.
Leko and Club Brugge KV split up in May 2019. The 41-year-old head coach joined the team in 2017.
He however started working at his new club, Al Ain, on June 1st, 2019. After a catastrophic home loss to Al Dhafra FC in December 2019, Leko quit the club Al Ain FC. After five months of subpar performance, both parties had decided to call it quits.

Road to Shanghai Port
With 4 victories and 2 defeats, Leko thus guided the group-surprise-finishing squad to second place. The team was drawn against the Rangers in the round of 32 as a result of their qualification.
Leko moved to Shanghai Port F.C. in December 2020, shortly before their UEFA Europa League match against Rangers. Under a two-year, total net 5-million-euro contract, he started however working for Shanghai Port F.C.
Leko took over as the new management of Shanghai Port on the Chinese side on January 1, 2021.
Investigation
Belgian authorities questioned Club Brugge KV coach Leko in October 2018 as part of a corruption probe.
In the ensuing legal proceeding, the judge also questioned Leko’s receipt of funds from Dejan Veljkovic’s Cypriot account in 2015.
Former Club Brugge KV coach Leko was however questioned all day in June 2019 as part of the investigation into football fraud in Belgium. He was eventually liberated, though.
Chinese Super League
Chinese Super League, or CSL, is the abbreviation for the Chinese Football Association Super League. However, due to sponsorship, it is now referred to as the China Ping An Chinese Football Association Super League.
As a result, it represents the highest level of professional football in China and is controlled by the Chinese Football Association (CFA). The old top-flight, the Chinese Jia-A League, was renamed to create the league in 2004.
Its Growth
The league has subsequently grown, with its first season featuring 12 teams. Since the CSL’s start, 35 teams have participated, and 8 of those teams have won the championship. Shandong Taishan won the 2021 season and is the current Super League champion.
One of the most well-known professional sports leagues in China is the Chinese Super League. For league games in the 2018 season, there were however 24,107 average spectators.
This was however the sixth-highest salary of any professional association football league in the world and the twelfth-highest of any domestic professional sports league worldwide.

The involvement of the CFA
The Chinese Football Association, The CSL Company, has also given permission for the League to operate at the moment.
