Although current Guimar\u00e3es fans deny the link, the club’s name seems to be a reference to Vit\u00f3ria de Set\u00fabal, which at the time was a prominent contender for the Campeonato de Portugal. The Vimaranenses were initially promoted to the Primeira Liga in 1941 after seasons of toiling in the Braga FA levels. Two seasons later, they also faced the Sadinos from Setbal for the first time in the League. Against all odds, surprise package Guimar\u00e3es made it to their first Ta\u00e7a de Portugal final in their first season, however they fell to Belenenses 2-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a European competition, Vit\u00f3ria advanced the furthest in the 1986\u20131987 UEFA. Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach of West Germany beat them 5-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vit\u00f3ria battled in several of the early 2000s seasons to maintain their place in the top Portuguese level, then known as the Superliga. The deterioration of Pimenta Machado’s leadership during those years, the club’s former president who was charged with embezzlement, was a notable event. He was given a four-year, three-month jail term in February 2008 with a suspended sentence. However, a year later, he was found not guilty of the accusation. He only had to pay a \u20ac4,000 fine for forging a document. Notwithstanding, the team finished fifth in the league in the 2004\u201305 season and earned a spot in the UEFA Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relegation and Promotion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They were demoted to the Segunda Liga the following year (2005\u201306) after placing 17th in the Superliga and reaching the Ta\u00e7a de Portugal semi-final after defeating Benfica in the quarterfinals (where they previously competed in 1958). The eventual champions Sevilla, Bolton Wanderers of the Premier League, and Zenit Saint Petersburg of Russia advanced from the club’s UEFA Cup group while the club was eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the direction of Manuel Cajuda, Vit\u00f3ria returned to the top division after finishing second to Leixes S.C. A joint-best third-place result in 2007\u201308 earned them a spot in the 2008\u201309 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. It was their first participation. There, they bowed to the Swiss side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FC Basel won the match 2-1 overall, with Roberto Calmon F\u00e9lix’s late offside goal being disallowed. As a consequence of their elimination, Vit\u00f3ria was seeded into the 2008\u201309 UEFA Cup first round. Portsmouth of England defeated them after extra time, 4\u20132 on aggregate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2012\u201313 season, Vit\u00f3ria, under the leadership of Rui Vit\u00f3ria, had financial difficulties, which forced them to part ways with numerous seasoned players and make bets on inexperienced players. Nevertheless, after losing five finals, they eventually prevailed to claim their first Ta\u00e7a de Portugal crown. In order to go to the final, Vit\u00f3ria defeated rival Braga. There, they overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Benfica 2-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again reaching the cup final in 2017, Vit\u00f3ria fell to double champion S.L. Benfica 2-1. Being the first team in UEFA tournaments to begin a game without a European player on the pitch, the squad made history that September. The team had four managers in the 2020\u201321 season (Tiago, Jo\u00e3o Henriques, Bino, and Moreno) before finishing sixth and just missing qualifying for Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
