Jaylen Brown (born October 24, 1996) is an American professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association’s Boston Celtics (NBA). He played one year of college basketball for the California Golden Bears, where he was named first-team all-conference and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

Brown declared for the 2016 NBA draft after his freshman season, and the Celtics selected him with the third overall pick. As a pro, he has alternated between shooting guard and small forward. Brown was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in 2021, and he helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals in 2022.

High School Career

Brown went to Marietta’s Wheeler High School. As a senior, he helped lead his team to the Class 6A State Championship of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Brown hit two free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to give Wheeler a 59-58 victory. Brown’s senior season also included 28 points and 11 rebounds in a 76-70 victory over Harry Giles and Wesleyan Christian Academy; a 24-point and 8-rebound performance in a 61-40 victory over Malik Monk and Bentonville High School; 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists in a 75-65 victory over Ben Simmons and Montverde Academy;[5] and 29 points and 15 rebounds against Huntington Prep.

Brown won a gold medal with the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team at the 2014 FIBA Americas Championship. In addition, he was chosen to play in the 2015 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game. Brown was named Gatorade Georgia Boys Player of the Year, USA Today’s All-USA Georgia Player of the Year, Georgia’s Mr. Basketball, and Class 6A Player of the Year at the end of an outstanding high school career.

College career

During his first semester of college, Brown enrolled in a master’s-level course in Berkeley’s Cultural Studies of Sport in Education program.

  He also gained some Spanish fluency, with the goal of learning three more languages by the age of 25.

Brown averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 27.6 minutes per game for the Golden Bears in 34 games in 2015-16. On November 27, 2015, he scored 27 points against Richmond, and on January 27, 2016, he scored 27 points against Utah. He had a season-high 11 rebounds twice, against Sam Houston State on November 23, 2015, and Colorado on January 1, 2016.

Rookie season in 2016-17

Brown was a Celtics player in 2018.
Brown was selected third overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics on June 23, 2016.
  After averaging 16.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 steals in six Summer League games, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Celtics on July 27.   He made his Celtics debut on October 26 against the Brooklyn Nets, scoring nine points on 3-for-4 shooting and adding two blocked shots in 19-plus minutes. [21] Brown scored 19 points in his first career start against the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 3.

Sophomore season in 2017-18

Brown scored a then-career-high 25 points in the Celtics’ 102-99 loss to the Cavaliers in the 2017-18 season opener on October 17, 2017.

On November 18, he set a career-high with 27 points to help the Celtics win their 15th straight game, 110-99 over the Atlanta Hawks.

He scored 26 points against the Denver Nuggets on December 13. Brown was out for two weeks in March 2018 due to a concussion.  He set a then-career high with 32 points against the Chicago Bulls on April 6, 2018.   Brown scored a playoff career-high 30 points in Game 2 of the Celtics’ first-round playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, helping Boston take a 2-0 lead.

Struggles in the 2018-19 season

Brown struggled early in the season, with the Boston Globe criticizing him for taking too many two-point jump shots and displaying an overall “lack of focus and discipline.”

Following the Celtics’ unexpected 10-win, 10-loss start to the season, Jackie MacMullan wrote that “nobody disappointed [the Celtics] more than Brown.”

Brown scored 21 points in a 128-100 win over the New York Knicks on December 6, after missing three games due to a bruised lower back.  He scored a game-high 23 points two days later in a 133-77 victory over the Chicago Bulls.   He scored 30 points in a 120-111 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on December 31.

Breakthrough in the 2019-20 season

Brown agreed to terms with the Celtics on a four-year, $115 million contract extension.

[On December 28, 2019, he tied his career high with 34 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

 He narrowly missed being selected for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in January.  Following series victories over the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors in four and seven games, respectively, the Celtics advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in Brown’s four years in the NBA. However, in those Conference Finals, Boston was defeated in six games by the Miami Heat.

First All-Star appearance in the 2020-21 season

Brown set a career-high with 42 points, five rebounds, and four assists against the Memphis Grizzlies on December 30, 2020.

Jaylen Brown was named to the NBA All-Star team as a reserve on February 24, 2021, his first All-Star appearance.

 He scored 40 points in a 121-113 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on April 15.  Brown’s career-best season came to an end with only four regular-season games remaining after undergoing wrist surgery for a torn scapholunate ligament in his left wrist.
