In the 2008 NBA Summer League, Love went on to play and led all players in rebounding. As his minutes increased, he was named NBA Rookie of the Month for March. Sophomore Season (2009-2010)
Love was invited to participate in the USA National Team mini-camp that was conducted from July 22-25 in Las Vegas during the off-season. In a pre-season game on October 16, 2009, he had an injury and began the season on the injured list. However, the first 18 games of the season were missed by him due to his surgery. On December 4, 2009, he returned against the New Orleans Hornets and made immediate impact for the Timberwolves. The young star was chosen to play in NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge. The season was finished with him ranking as the NBAs best rebounder.
It was reported on October 17, 2012, that Love would miss about six to eight weeks. This was due to an incident of his third and fourth metacarpals on his right (shooting) hand breaking during a morning workout. Just five weeks after sustaining the injury, he surprised fans by returning to the Wolves on November 21. Once again, he refractured his shooting hand in a game against the Denver Nuggets. Timberwolves then announced that the injury would require surgery and he would miss an additional 8-10 weeks of playing time due to that. In his final year in Minnesota, he set an NBA record in 2013-14, as the first player in NBA history to record 2,000 points, 900 rebounds, and 100 3-pointers in a single season. For the second time in his career, he was named to the All-NBA Second Team.
Cleveland Cavaliers (2014-present)
The Timberwolves traded Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team trade on August 23, 2014. 34 of the Cavaliers final 43 games were won with the help of Love. As a result, they finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 53-29 overall record. After he dislocated his left shoulder in the first quarter of Game 4, Love missed the remainder of the playoffs. Despite the different opinions, the league ruled that Olynyk had “yanked Love
s arm down” and suspended Olynyk for one game.
His team announced it would take Love four to six months to recover as he underwent surgery. The Cavaliers got to the 2015 NBA Finals but were defeated in six games by the Golden State Warriors. Love opted out of the final year of his contract, worth $16.7 million in 2015-16 to return to free agency on June 24, 2015. However, he re-signed with the Cavaliers on July 9, 2015.
