Nasarawa United F.C.

Nasarawa united F.C is a lafia based football club that competes in the Nigerian premier League.

Brief History

After the Nasarawa government took over control of Black Stars FC of Gombe, the team was established in 2003. In the 2004 05 season, they joined the Nigerian Premier League. Lafia Township Stadium, where they play, can hold about 5,000 spectators. The team’s nickname is the Solid Miners.

2009–10 seasons

In the 2008 09 season, the squad experienced financial difficulties that one player claimed nearly put them in danger of “starvation.” Following a 1-1 draw at home against the Niger Tornadoes on March 7, home supporters rioted and even followed the Tornadoes to their hotel where they attacked them. With three games left, the team had to play in Ibadan for the remainder of the campaign, guaranteeing relegation to the Nigeria National League.

The team’s 2009 10 season was at risk of being canceled due to the consequent debt of 46 million naira (about $300,000). According to reports, the team’s debt at this point in the season was 58 million naira ($387,000), and they lost 16 games as a result of their fragile financial situation. The five months suspension came to an end with a 1-0 win over Mighty jets. Ultimately, they won their division in 2012, but unfortunately were subsequently relegated back to the Premier League.
