The 1870 and 1871 period was an influential year for New York Times due to the fact that the newspaper wrote about some misdeeds of William Tweed. He is the head of the city’s Democratic Party a.k.a “Tammany Hall”.

Even though Tweed approached The New York Times with the sum of five million dollars not to post about his story, New York Times still posted it. As a result, it brought an end to Tweeds actions.

As time progressed, The New York Times saw the need not to support the Republican Party candidates and stand on their own. This didn’t last long as they went on to support Democrat Grover Cleveland in his first presidential campaign in 1884.

As this happened, most of the Republican readers of the The New York Times stopped patronizing them. Due to this, they had a loss of $132,000. However, it didn’t take long before they regained their lost profits.
