A merger occurred between the Evening Independent and the St. Petersburg Times in November 1986. This saw the replacement of Poynter with Eugene Patterson as the editor.

The St. Petersburg Times continued to bear the name till it changed to the Tampa Bay Times in January 1, 2012. Then, four years later, it went on to buy its big rival, The Tampa Tribune. The public perceived the Tampa Bay Times to be more ‘liberal’, while the Tampa Tribune is more ’conservative’.
