Changchun Yatai Football Club

Changchun Yatai Football Club is a competitive Chinese football team that competes in the Chinese Super League at the moment with permission from the Chinese Football Association (simplified Chinese: traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Chángchn Yàtài) (CFA). The squad is headquartered in Changchun, Jilin, and plays at the 38,500-seat Changchun Stadium as their home field. The private Chinese business Jilin Yatai Group is the club’s originator and largest sponsor.

The team was established on June 6th, 1996, and made its professional appearance in 1997 in the 3rd division of China’s football league hierarchy. Upon merging with Huizhou PLA Sanon, they purchased a spot in the 2nd tier in 2000. They came in second place in their tier in 2001 but were not given a raise because of a match-fixing allegation.

Before finally being promoted to China’s top division at the conclusion of the 2005 league season, the club would undergo restructuring and reapply for a CFA playing license. They earned the league championship in the 2007 Chinese Super League and made their debut in the 2008 AFC Champions League. Later, they competed in the 2010 AFC Champions League and finished second in the 2009 Chinese Super League.

Club background

In order to compete in the lately completely commercialised league system, which permitted private businesses to own their own clubs, Changchun Yatai was established on June 6, 1996, by the regional conglomerate Jilin Yatai Group in Changchun, Jilin.

To ensure they had a lucrative youth academy, the club also moved in the best young talents from Shenyang before transferring them into their newly formed football training centre at an expense of 2 million yuan. The club would choose a dragon playing football as their crest whilst also assembling the club’s senior team. And the overall cost of setting up the entire venture would amount to twenty million yuan.

The club made very little progress over the following numerous seasons until they purchased a spot in the second division when they purchased Huizhou PLA Sanon at the start of the 2000 league season for 15 million yuan. Despite maintaining an undefeated home record, the team nonetheless ended the season in an unimpressive 5th place.

After leading the team to a runners-up finish and what appeared to progress to the top division for the first time in the next season, manager Yin Tiesheng, it was soon uncovered that Changchun’s 6-0 victory over Zhejiang Green Town on October 6, 2001, was a manipulated match. As a result, the club was refused advancement, all of the violators were suspended for a year, and the club was given 3 months to make amends and reapply for a CFA playing license.

But besides this, Yin Tiesheng continued to play and brought upcoming Chinese international players Du Zhenyu, Zhang Xiaofei, and Cao Tianbao up to the senior team from the club’s youth team, which was formed in Shenyang.

These athletes proceeded to claim the Jia B (2nd tier) championship in 2003, however, the Super League’s establishment prevented the team from being elevated.

In 2004, Chen Jingang took over as manager when Yin Tiesheng left the team to become the head coach of the Chinese U20 team.

During his leadership, Chen Jingang led the team to elevation to the Super League and a runners-up finish in the China League One level in 2005.

They ranked 4th in the club’s inaugural season, but Chen Jingang was fired upon alienating the players by vowing to take away their wagers if he wasn’t pleased with their gameplay.

Gao Hongbo was hired as the team’s new manager in 2007, and during his first campaign, he led them to the Chinese Super League championship.

Alongside Beijing Guoan, Changchun would now be permitted entry into the 2008 AFC Champions League. They would take their first match against Vietnamese football club Binh Dng on March 12, 2008, winning 2-1.

Although the team placed second in its group, only one team was permitted to advance to the knockout rounds, and the club plunged out of the competition. This unluckily had an impact on the team’s league position, and Gao Hongbo was dismissed during the season.

Li Shubin was hired as the club’s manager in September 2008 with the intention of seeing out the rest of the 2008 league season. Even so, under his direction, the team’s performance boosted, and after a hard-working second season, they finished as runners-up in the 2009 Chinese Super League.

Changchun defeated Indonesian team Persipura Jayapura 9-0 in one of Shen Xiangfu’s first matches for the club in the 2010 AFC Champions League, marking the biggest success for a Chinese team in the AFC Champions League ever notwithstanding delivering consistent significant proficiency for the team. The club resolved that Shen Xiangfu should manage the team for the upcoming season.

Despite the fact that there were two spots available and his league appearances were not stellar, Shen Xiangfu was incapable of leading Changchun into the knockout phase. Nevertheless, the club continued to use him for another season, during which he did not function much better. At the start of the 2012 Chinese Super League season, the club appointed Svetozar “apuri” as the team’s new manager.

Changchun performed poorly in the latter third of the 2018 Chinese Super League season, ending 15th. The group was dropped down to China League One. With a ten-game winning streak in the midst of the season in 2019, Changchun came dangerously close to being promoted back into the top division.

However, the team ultimately lost steam toward the conclusion of the season and concluded the year in 5th position. Changchun, though, moved back to the Chinese Super League following a two-year sabbatical and claimed the 2020 China League One championship.

Chen initially resisted joining Nanjing Yoyo of China League One, but he later transferred there on a one-year loan to help pay for Zhang Haifeng’s trade.

Following his loan contract expiration, Chen remained at Nanjing Yoyo on purpose, however, he was forced to leave since Liaoning refused to pay his transfer charge.
At the conclusion of the 2005 league season, he made his retirement known.

Career in management

Upon retiring in 2006, Chen managed a cafeteria. He entered the Liaoning Whowin coaching team in 2007, and in 2008 he was promoted to assistant coach, working under Ma Lin and Gao Sheng. Following Gao Sheng’s resignation from the club on April 9, 2014, he was named the interim manager.

He left Liaoning on August 2, 2015, while the team was struggling and on the verge of being demoted.

After an open contest in August 2016, Chen was chosen as China U-22’s interim manager.
In January 2017, he was appointed the team’s manager.

But in February 2017, Massimiliano Maddaloni, Marcello Lippi’s assistant coach for the China national team, took his place.

On March 30, 2017, Chen accompanied Tang Yaodong to Wuhan Zall of the China League One.

On July 9, 2017, he took over as the club’s manager following Tang Yaodong’s resignation.
Finally, on November 10th, 2017, he mutually agreed to end his deal with Wuhan.

Liaoning, who had just been demoted to the second division, named Chen as manager for the 2nd occasion on December 12 after agreeing to a three-year deal.

Following the shocking move to fire Uzbek manager Samvel Babayan, Chen was named the replacement manager of Changchun Yatai of China League One on October 5, 2020.
