About Deportivo Alaves Fc

We know for sure that Deportivo Alavés is a professional football club in Spain. People call it Alavés for short. It is based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country. Its year of discovery is 1 July 1920. They founded it initially as Sports Friends Club.

Since the 2016-17 season, the club has played in the top tier category of The Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, La Liga.  Although, after their relegation from La Liga in the 2021-22 season, they play in the Segunda División.

Following the Athletic Club of Bilbao and the Real Sociedad of San Sebastián, Alavés is the third most successful club in the Basque Country. The club recorded its biggest success when it qualified for the 2001 UEFA Cup Final in its debut in European competition. However, they lost to Liverpool 5-4 by a golden goal. The club reached the final of the Copa del Rey, losing out 3–1 to Barcelona in 2007.

Alavés’ home strip is a blue and white stripe shirt, blue shorts and white socks.  The 19,840-seater Mendizorrotza Stadium is where they host their home games. They train in other facilities situated in Labia. This information will help you to know how to join Alaves Fc Academy.

The Background Of The Club

In 1920, Alavés was founded under the name Sports Friends. However, on 23 January 1921, which is considered the official foundation date, the name was changed to the current one. In 1929-30, they became the first club to be promoted from the Segunda División to La Liga. A stint which would last three years.  Alavés finished 8th from 10 teams, escaping relegation narrowly with a point in its Primera División debut season.

Alavés reached the top tier again in 1953–54 and played two consecutive seasons. In the 1973-74 campaign, Roman Galarraga, then manager helped the club secure promotion to Segunda División. Alavés later went down to Segunda División B in June 1983, after avoiding relegation in the previous season. They remained there till 1985–86. The clubs struggled for years and even played in the fourth tier during the late 1980s.

In 1994-95, Alavés finally secured promotion back into the Segunda División after two consecutive years of winning their Segunda División B group. In 1977, this División was created as the new third level – but in the promotion play-offs, it failed.

The club returned to the top flight after a 42-year break after winning the Segunda División in 1997–98. The club barely escaped relegation by a point on their return season. Nonetheless, they beat Barcelona the next season and finished 6th, thereby qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time. Coming just 12 years after their lowest-ever: eighth in their group in the fourth level,  this is their highest-ever league finish to date.

More Information

The club finished the domestic season 10th  and reached the UEFA Cup final in 2000-01. They defeated Internazionale, Rayo Vallecano and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, crushing the latter 9–2 by aggregate. Unfortunately, Alavés lost the final 4-5 to Liverpool after taking the match to extra time by an “own golden goal”.  In addition to two red cards, two goals were disallowed in extra time. The match was described as one of the greatest showpiece matches in UEFA history.

They qualified for the UEFA Cup for a consecutive season and finished 2001–02 in the seventh position. The European campaign of 2002–03 was far less successful than the previous years, with an opening win over Ankaragücü followed by a defeat to another Turkish Süper Lig side, Beşiktaş. Alavés defeated Real Valladolid 3-1 to record its 100th win in La Liga on 26 January 2003.

The club was relegated the next season, but two years later, they gained promotion back.  Alavés was acquired at this time by Ukrainian–American businessman Dmitry Pietrman. Various issues with the club’s coaches, players and fans alike followed. The club finished 18th place, a point from safety after going through three head coaches. In 2007, Pietrman resigned and left the club in heavy debt. In 2008-09, Alavés was relegated to the third level after two years of fighting against it.

The End Of The Black Period

José Antonio Querejeta bought the club and ended a subsequent black period in Segunda B which lasted four years. In 2013, they were promoted into the second their again as overall champions of the third tier. This gave the club an opportunity to sort out its economic issues. Alavés were promoted to LaLiga three years later as second-tier champions on 29 May 2016. This was after they overtook leganés on the final day by defeating Numancia 2-0.

Alavés beat LaLiga Champions Barcelona 2-1 to get their first win since their return to LaLiga on 10 September 2016. They later beat Celta Vigo in the semi-finals to qualify for the 2017 Copa del Rey Final on 7 February 2017. They previously qualified for the semi-finals in 1998 and 2004. This was the first time in their history that the club had qualified for the final of the national cup. Coincidentally, Barcelona who they met in the league directly after they both played their Cup semi-finals, was their opponent in the final. Alavés were crushed 6-0 by Barcelona in their own Mendizorrotza Stadium. The Catalans also went on to win the final 3-1 at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. Alavés finished 9th with 14 wins, 13 draws and 11 losses in the LaLiga that campaign.

Following a defeat by Levante, Alavés were relegated to the second division in the 2021–22 season, Alaves were relegated to the second division following defeat by Levante. This ended their six-year run in the LaLiga, their longest stay in the division.

The Alaves Football Ground(Stadium)

Background

They opened Alavés home ground on 27 April 1924. Behind only El Molinón and Mestalla, it is the third oldest football stadium in Spanish Professional Football.

The stadium had various redevelopments throughout its history, the most important being its expansion in 1999. However, they increased the capacity of the stadium to 19,840. This came after they made new stands in the corners.

The club president Josean Querejeta announced a plan for modernization and expansion of the stadium in December 2016. This will possibly bring its capacity to 28,000. In June 2020, the club confirmed the delay of the project for at least a year. This is because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.
