History of Lech Poznań FC

Formation and early years (1920–1945)

Young activists from the Catholic Youth Association made the decision to break out and create their own football team in August 1920. Jan Nowak, Antoni Dyzman, Jan Dyzman, Leon Nowicki, J zef Magdziak, Kazimierz Zmuda, Stanisaw Nowicki, Stefan Fiedler, J zef Goliski, Leon Stachowski, J zef Blumreder, and Jan Wojtek were the club’s founders. Lech’s beginnings may be found on March 19, 1922, when it was first formed as a football club. The organization’s first legal name was Towarzystwo Sportowe Liga Dbiec. The club acquired a football field on Grzybowa Street in September 1922. The club’s inaugural game, against Urania Staroka, took place in May 1922 and resulted in a 1-1 draw.

After six years in Class C, the club received promotion to Class B in 1928. The club moved to Class A in 1932, where it played host to the biggest teams in the area. The club may move up from there to the First National Division, but it wouldn’t happen before World War II broke out. The Klub Sportowy Kolejowego Przysobienia Wojskowego Pozna (also known as KP) was established in the fall of 1933. W. In 1945, soon after the war was over, athletic officials established Lech the first club from the city.

New disappointments and successes (1994–present)

Lech was able to maintain a middle-of-the-table position, and their highest finish was fourth in 1990, which qualified them for the 1999 2000 UEFA Cup. However, they lost to IFK G teborg in the first round and eliminated Liepjas Metalurgs in the qualification round. Lech spent 28 years in the first division, but only a few months later, in 2000, relegation to the second tier came. Lech’s first year in the second division was a complete failure; they were on the verge of dropping to the third. Only with tremendous effort was the club kept from relegation and won promotion to the top level the following season.

Lech prioritized permanence in their first year of competition (2002-03) after leaving the I league. The Kolejorz had a highly unfavorable dynamic at the start of the following season. The club recruited Czesaw Michniewicz as a new coach after five days. Lech finished the season in sixth place, making the unexpected hiring of the young coach a surprise. Most significant, though, was their victory against their fierce rival Legia Warsaw in the final two games of the 2004 season to win the Polish Cup. A few days later, Lech’s triumph over Wisa Kraków in the Super Cup prompted a big celebrated by the crowd in Pozna. Even though the following two seasons did not offer any success of that magnitude, Lech and coach Franciszek Smuda were able to finish first each season.

European experience

The following year, Jacek Zieliski took over as the Poland national team manager. Zieliski managed to lead Lech to their sixth championship in their history in the 2009 10 season, using many of the players who helped them win third place and the cup the previous year. Robert Lewandowski, who was the league’s leading scorer with 18 goals, returned to serve as a reference in attack. They lost to Sparta Prague in the third round of the 2010/11 Champions League while playing without Lewandowski. In the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League, one of their best performances was when they defeated Dnipro to advance to the tournament’s group stage for the first time. Lech and Manchester City placed second in their group, eliminating Juventus and FC Salzburg from the competition. However, despite winning in Poland (1-0) and losing in Portugal, they tasted defeat in the round of 32 by S.C. Braga.
