Overview of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium

In Uyo, the state capital of Akwa Ibom, there is an all-seater national sports stadium called the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium (formerly known as the Akwa Ibom International Stadium). The stadium provides as a venue for several social, cultural, and religious activities in addition to being home to the Nigerian Super Eagles. Julius Berger got the construction contract for the Akwa Ibom International Stadium complex and Games Village in 2012, and work on it finished in 2014. Allianz Arena served as inspiration for the 30,000-seat ultramodern multifunctional sports complex.

After his inauguration ceremony there on May 29, 2015, Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel renamed Akwa Ibom Stadium to Godswill Obot Akpabio International Stadium. Godswill Akpabio was the state’s immediate previous governor.

Construction and Architecture

The Nigerian structural engineering company Julius Berger got the contract for the stadium’s design. They were in charge of the stadium’s architectural design, execution planning, construction monitoring, and upkeep. The stadium, which has a seating capacity of 50,000 people and is on 48 hectares of land, has some distinctive characteristics like bulletproof VIP/VVIP sections, folding chairs, two digital scoreboards, digital playback screens, digital flood lights, and 30 emergency exits.

Structure

A white triangular-shaped exterior covering encloses the entire spectator stand. The stadium building is in two phases and contains a 400-meter running track for sporting events. It is the pilot element of the development of Uyo Sports Park. There are roughly 22,500 seats available in the East Stand and Curves. The Governors’ Lounge is in the Grand Stand on Level Two and includes seating for 30 to 40 VVIPs. While the Grand Stand can easily hold roughly 7,500 spectators, including the VIP/VVIPs, it is only designed to transport a little more than 30,000 spectators for soccer or track & field games. Additionally, there is a six-lane track constructed especially for use by athletes.

Facilities
