History of Drogheda United F.C.

1919–1975: Early years

The first Drogheda United, founded in 1919, spent all of their early years as a non-league club, but on Saturday, June 22, 1963, another Drogheda Club, Drogheda F.C. (created in 1962), got promotion to the League of Ireland when the league’s membership increased to twelve teams from ten. They placed tenth in their first season there and also in each of the following three seasons, finishing in the bottom three. They finished in a respectable fifth place in the 1967/68 campaign, and in the next campaign, they took sixth.

When the league grew to fourteen teams, the club once more fell to the bottom of the standings, finishing in the bottom five in each of the following six seasons and suffering their worst league loss, 8-1 to Cork Hibernians, in the 1970/71 campaign. However, they did reach the FAI Cup final that year, where they lost to Limerick in a replay, 3-0, after the first game ended in a draw.

1975–2003

In order to establish Drogheda United F.C., Drogheda F.C. and Drogheda United merged in 1975. The 1975–76 season saw an improvement in the team’s fortunes as they placed sixth in the league and made it to the FAI Cup Final for the second time, losing 1-0 to Bohemians. In stark contrast to what had transpired previously, they came in third for the following three seasons.

Drogheda United also set two club milestones during these seasons: Cathal Muckian’s 21 league goals in a season and their largest league win (7-1 vs. Finn Harps). The club subsequently went through another difficult period in the league, ending in the bottom half for the following five seasons, with the exception of the 1982–83 season, when they managed to finish second, their second-highest league result ever (they eventually won the league in 2007). In the 1983–84 season, they did also win their first-ever trophy, the League of Ireland Cup.
