Ferranti Thistle (1943–1974)

In 1943, the group was founded as Ferranti Amateurs. They initially competed in the Edinburgh FA’s Amateur Second Division as a works team for the Ferranti engineering firm. The club changed its name to Ferranti Thistle in 1948 and started playing in the Edinburgh and District Welfare Association, where they did so for five seasons. In 1953, they made the transition to adult football and joined the East of Scotland League.The club won the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup during this time in 1963. The club relocated to Edinburgh’s City Park facility in 1969.

The club joined the SFA in 1972, making it possible for them to compete in the previously closed Scottish Qualifying Cup, which they eventually won in 1973. On December 16, 1972, the team faced Duns in its inaugural Scottish Cup game.

Due to Third Lanark’s dissolution seven years earlier and the Scottish Football League’s new three-tier structure, a spot in the second level of the league became available in 1974. Ferranti Thistle defeated Inverness Thistle, Hawick Royal Albert, Gateshead United, and four other Highland League teams to be welcomed into the league with a vote of 21-16. The club had to overcome a number of challenges before they could join the Division because their name did not adhere to the strict SFL regulations at the time regarding overt sponsorship of teams and the City Ground was subpar. The neighborhood council proposed using Meadowbank Stadium, a cutting-edge stadium constructed in 1970. The club was given the name Meadowbank Thistle as a result of an Edinburgh Evening News naming contest. The SFL gave their approval just in time for the new season.

Meadowbank Thistle (1974–1995)

The first Meadowbank Thistle manager, John Bain, faced a difficult assignment to assemble a competitive group in time for the new season because he had limited time to construct a squad from the already-existing Ferranti squad. Meadowbank participated in their first competitive League Cup game, which they ultimately lost 1-0 to Albion Rovers.
