IF Elfsborg

Idrottsf reningen Elfsborg is a Swedish professional football team that plays its games in Bors and is a member of the Västergötlands Fotbollförbund. They compete in Swedish football’s Allsvenskan and have spent the majority of their history there. Since 17 April 2005, they have competed at Bor’s Arena, which serves as their home field. Stadium

Bors Arena, the club’s home field, is also known as Elfsborg Fortress because Elfsborg was the Allsvenskan’s top-ranked home team in the 2000s (decade). It is one of only two Allsvenskan teams to have defeated the Swedish national football team (the other team, AIK 1979, won with a score of 3-2 in the Ryavallen opening ceremony). It is also one of only two teams to have won the league as newcomers in 1961; the other team being sters IF in 1968. Elfsborg has frequently competed in the Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds. They also competed in the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup and won the competition overall in the 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup. History

A group of young people created Bor’s Fotbollslag on June 26, 1904. Due to a perceived overabundance of teams with the name “Bors,” the name was changed to IF Elfsborg in 1906. Elfsborg initially gained promotion to Allsvenskan in 1926 after winning the Västsvenska Serien and defeating halmstads BK in the play-off. Sven Jonasson, a striker for Elfsborg who competed in the 1934 and 1938 World Cups, captained a very capable squad throughout the 1930s. Elfsborg first won the Allsvenskan in 1936, and two other championships came soon after (1939 and 1940). Up to seven Elfsborg players represented Sweden at this time in the national squad.

For many years, the club also fielded a bandy team. When it came to bandy, IF Elfsborg won the Västergötland district championship in 1920, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1934, and 1938. Elfsborg relocated from Ramnavallen to the newly built Ryavallen in 1941 to host home matches. As a result of Finland’s participation in the Second World War, they were unable to participate in the first game at the new stadium, which was instead played host to Elfsborg, who defeated Sweden’s national team 2-1.

Relegation/Promotion

Elfsborg came very close to winning the Allsvenskan once more in the middle of the 1940s, but they consistently placed second. Elfsborg’s heyday ended by the late 1940s, and the team was subsequently relegated in 1954. Elfsborg earned promotion in 1960 following a strong campaign that saw them win 20 of their 22 games. In 1961, the club won the Allsvenskan for the fourth time, making history as the first Swedish side to advance directly from the second tier to the top division. The great Sven Andreasson served as chairman during this time.

Elfsborg finished in second place in 1977, but the club struggled in the years that followed. Elfsborg finished last in Allsvenskan in 1987, and they didn’t make it back to the top division until 1997. Anders Svensson and Tobias Linderoth were among the future Swedish internationals on the team that gained promotion. Elfsborg battled to stay in the Allsvenskan after winning their first two cup championships (in 2001 and 2003).
