Introduction To Santos FC Reserves and Academy

Santos FC reserve and academy teams make up the Santos Futebol Clube Reserves and Academy.  It was established to discover and nurture talents who have the potential to play for the Santos senior team in the future. This is basically the Santos Fc Youth Academy Registration Requirement.

The Lay-out Of The Academy

Over 100 students are enrolled in Santos Futebol Clube academy, and they are grouped into 5 different categories: U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17, U-20. The Urbano Stadium contains two modern dormitories featuring  living room, recreation room and cafeteria, used to accommodate the students. Also, medical, dental and psychological assistance are provided to these young athletes. Brazilian football saw Santos break new grounds in terms of their physical development program.

To setup a standard in physical development for all academy teams, Santos developed the Centro de Desenvolvimento ร  Performance ao Futebol (Center of Football Performance Development). This project starts with boys over six years old and covers 270 young athletes.

The Vila Belmiro Stadium houses the gymnasium used by the youth teams in itโ€™s third floor. It is equipped with technology similar to that used by Santos senior team. Santos built the Centro de Estudos Luiza Neรณfiti (Luiza Neรณfiti Study Center) adjacent to the gym, showing how much they value education.

Some Prominent Academy Graduates

The Set Of 2000s

Santos had 15 youth graduates who featured for the side in the future, from the squad that was crowned champions in 2002. They include; Rafael, Alex, Andre Luis, Michel, Pereira, Preto, Leandro, Canindรฉ, Diego, Paulo Almeida, Adiel, Douglas, Robinho, William and Bruno Moraes.  Another set of academy graduates featured for the senior team regularly from the squad that finished second In 2003. Players like Robinho, Alex, Andrรฉ Luรญs, Paulo Almeida and Diego were already starters, Jerri was the newcomer more regularly used  mainly as a substitute during the year.

The 2004 campaign also saw Domingoโ€™s, Leonardo and Luis Augusto, who were the main youth graduates of the year, feature regularly. The following three years, the club failed to produce outstanding graduates, after most of them left the club for Europe (the most notable sale was Robinho’s to Real Madrid in 2005). Players like Renatinho, Felipe, Marcelo, Adriano, Carlinhos, Thiago Carleton, Dรญonรญsio and Moraes made up Santosโ€™ first team for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Moraes netted the winner in 2007 Campeonato Paulista.

The Set Of 2010s

Santos boasted of graduates like Neymar, Ganso, Andrรฉ, Alan Patrick, Rafael and Robinho In their 2010 season which was astronomical(despite the latter and Andrรฉ left in June). Neymar specially was very spectacular, and players like Felipe Anderson and Victor Andrade alongside him played regularly for the senior team in the following two years.

The Catalan Giants FC Barcelona bought Neymar and afterwards, a revolution followed in Santos in 2013. Claudinei Oliveira, the former youth sidesโ€™ manager played Alan Santos, Leandrinho, Neรญlton, Giva, Emerson Palmeiri, Gustavo Henrique and Alison in the first team after his appointment as the first teamโ€™s manager. The latter two impressed that season.  Geuvรขnio, Gabriel and Jubal impressed the next season.

The likes of Daniel Gueses, Zeca and Thiago Maia featured regularly in the senior team, mostly under Dorival Junior In 2015. The first products of the B-team, Lucas Verรญssimo, Ronaldo Mendes and Victor Bueno particularly were regularly featured in the first team in 2016. After Ronaldo left in the summer, Bueno put up a good display and netted ten goals to be elected the Newcomer of the year’s Brasileirรฃo.

More Information

Arthur Gomes and Matheus Oliveira were amongst the promoted from the U-20s during the 2017 season. Yan and Thaciano were also promoted from the B-team. However, none of these players were regulars in the first team. Yuri Alberto and Rodrygo from the U-17s team were promoted straight to the first team late in the season. Rodrygo became a regular first team player and was very outstanding in 2018.

B-team graduate Diego Pituca was promoted alongside U-20 products like Robson Bambu, Gabriel Calabres, Guilherme Nunes and Matheus Guedes. After featuring on the bench for some games, Victor Yan, Lucas Lourenรงo and Emerson were later demoted back to their youth teams. U-17 forward Kaio Jorge was promoted to the senior team later in the year.

Unfortunately, Santos executives decided to dissolve the B-teamโ€™s operations for the 2019 season on 16 October 2018.  The youth system had some minor protagonism in the first team’s performance during itโ€™s 2019 season. Although they were already featured in the first team previously, Gustavo Henrique, Lucas Verรญssimo and Alison were the only players played regularly. Only  Wagner Leonardo, Sandry and Tailson debuted in the senior team that season.

The Set Of 2020s

More youth graduates were called up into the senior team for the 2020 campaign under Jesualdo Ferreira. Renuer made his senior team debut and Kaio Jorge developed into a first team starter. The likes of Ivonei, Anderson Cearรก and Alex were also promoted by Jesualdo who also took up Marcos Leonardo for training.

ร‚ngelo debuted at 15 years, becoming the second-youngest player ever to debut for Santos. This happened after Cuca replaced Jesualdo as the clubโ€™s manager. While Joรฃo Paulo and John shared the starting spot, Sandry was a regular starter in the first team. Five youth graduates were in Santos’s starting eleven (John, Verรญssimo, Alison, Sandry and Kaio Jorge), two came in as substitutes as well (Wellington Tim and Bruno Marques), when the club reached the 2020 Copa Libertadores. Generally, amongst the 23-man matchday team, 12 players were products of the clubโ€™s youth system.

Ariel Holan took over as manager for the 2021 season and awarded ร‚ngelo, Kaiky and Gabriel Pirani a place in the starting lineup. Also, he regularly featured Kevin Malthus and Vinicius Balieiro. The appointment of subsequent leaders Fernando Diniz and Fรกbio Carille favored Pirani as he was featured regularly.

ร‚ngelo, Kaiky, Marcos Leonardo and Lucas Pires became frequent starters for Santos in their 2022 campaign. Lucas Barbosa and Rwan Seco also received call-ups to the first team.

About The Santos FC

People refer to the Brazilian football club Santos Futebol Clube as Santos for short or Santos FC. It based in Vila Belmiro, a bairro in the city of Santos. Interestingly, it is the team with the most goals in football history. Santos competes in the highest division of Brazilian football, Basileirรฃo and the Paulistรฃo, Sรฃo Pauloโ€™s state premier state league.

To solve the unavailability of football representation in Santos, three sports enthusiasts Raimundo Marques, Mรกrio Ferraz de Campos, and Argemiro de Souza Jรบnior founded Santos FC in 1912. Santos has become one of Brazil’s most successful clubs since then. The club is a symbol of Jogo Bonito (English: the Beautiful Game) in football culture, hence the motto “Tรฉcnica e Disciplina” (technique and discipline).

They achieved this mainly because of the Peixe’s golden generation of the 1960s, that boasted of players like Gilmar, Mauro Ramos, Mengรกlvio, Coutinho, Pepe and most prominent of all, Pรฉlรฉ. International Olympic Committee named Pรฉlรฉ as the “Athlete of the Century” and they consider him as the best and most outstanding player in the history of football.

Os Santรกsticos Wins

Os Santรกsticos recorded a total of 24 titles won during that decade including five consecutive Brasileirรตes, a feat that remains unequaled today. People regard them as one of the best teams in football history. They completed a quadruple after winning four competitions in 1962; it includes the Paulistรฃo, the Brasileirรฃo, the Copa Libertadores, and the European/South American Cup.

Santos were national champions eight times and are one of the most successful clubs in the Brasileirรฃo. Also, theyโ€™ve won 22 Paulistรฃos, three Copa Libertadores, two Intercontinental Cups, one Supercopa de Campeones Intercontinentales, one Copa, CONMEBOL (the precursor of current Copa Sudamericana) one Copa do Brasil, and one Recopa Sudamericana. Santos became the first club, in the entire history of football, to reach the milestone of 10,000 goals on 20 January 1998. People voted the club as one of the most successful clubs in the 20th century by FIFA.

The 20,120 capacity Vila Belmiro serves as the homeground of Santos. Their home strip is white shirts, with white shorts, and white socks. The “Leรฃo do Mar” written by Mangeri Neto is the most prominent Santista anthem. As of 2013, Santos is the 2nd most valuable club in Brazil and South America, and 38th most valuable club in the world according to Brand Finance, worth over $65 million. Santos is Brazil’s fourth-richest sports club and one of the biggest football clubs in the world in terms of revenue. In 2012, they generated an annual turnover of over $114 million. Corinthians, Palmeiras and Sรฃo Paulo are Santos main rivals.

The Home Ground Of Santos FC

The home ground of Santos Futebol Clube is the Estรกdio Urbano Caldeira, also known as Vila Belmiro. It is located in the Vila Belmiro neighborhood of Santos, Sรฃo  Paulo.

On 12 October 1916, Santos faced Clube Atlรฉtico Ypiranga to mark the inauguration of the stadium. They won the match 2-1, with Adolfo Millon Jr  scoring the first goal of the stadium. In 1933, it received the name in honor of former player, manager and chairman of Santos, Urbano Caldeira.  Due to itโ€™s location within the Vila Belmiro region, they nicknamed the stadium, Vila Belmiro. Since 1916, the stadium has been Santos’ permanent residence, although, they use the Pacaembu Stadium located in Sรฃo Paulo for big matches. This is due to the low capacity of Vila Belmiro.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the stadium underwent several expansions and renovations. The most prominent was the irrigation and drainage systems, floodlighting and the replacement of the field. In 1964, the Campeonato Paulista match between Santos and Corinthians saw the stadium record its current highest attendance. Over 32,989 spectators witnessed the game.

The Location Of The Stadium

The Estรกdio Urbano Caldeira is located in the Vila Belmiro neighborhood, in the Princesa Isabel street. It occupies the block bounded by the streets of Tiradentes, Don Pedro I, and Josรฉ de Alencar. The arena is 600 feet (182.88 meters) in between the avenues of Senator Pinheiro Machado and Dr. Bernadino de Campos.

Background Details

A field in the Macuco neighborhood hosted Santos training sessions soon after its foundation. However, the field did not meet the minimum size standards to host official matches. So, the “Igreja Coraรงรฃo de Maria” pitch in Ana Costa Avenue hosted Santos fixtures. Although, other clubs in town used it.  Santos rejected several International friendlies due to constant conflicts with other city clubs on the use of the field. The situation became beyond control in 1915. The leaders consisting a commission formed by Luiz Suplicy Jรบnior, Harold Cross, Sebastiรฃo Arantes Nogueira and Francisco Viriato Corrรชa da Costa began the search for land to resolve the issue.

A general assembly approved the purchase of an area of 16,500 square meters, in the neighborhood of Vila Belmiro on 31 May 1916. Both club presidents, Agnello Cรญcero de Oliveira and vice-president, Dr รlvaro Ribeiro approved it. Companhia de Habitaรงรตes Econรดmicas owned the land and they bought the field from them at a price of Rs66,660,000.  The board members obtained a 10-year loan which was liquified in 1923 after paying Rs$35,000,000 in interest fees.

Also, the clubโ€™s finances restricted them from obtaining a nearby area belonging to Beneficรชncia Portuguesa until 1989. 20 August was the original date for the inauguration of the field. However, due to the demise of Dr. รlvaro Ribeiro, they postponed it until further notice. They celebrated the inauguration of the Vila Belmiro sports park on 12 October of that year. It happened with several ceremonies among the members, including a march by musical corporation Humanitรกria, to see off playing on Macuco field.

More Information

10 days later at 13:30 (UTC-3), the stadium held its first game between Santos and Ypiranga for the 1916 Campeonato Paulista. It was the competition’s 491st match and Santos came out victories 2-1.  Ticket prices ranged from Rs$1 for the public to Rs$2 for bleacher. While Adolfo Millon Jr. scored the first ever goal on that stadium,  Jarbas scored the second and Bororรณ scored for the visiting team. The match referee was  Demosthenes de Silos.

Santos was formed by: Odorico; Amรฉrico and Arantes; Pereira, Oscar and Junqueira; Millon, Marba, Tedesco, Jarbas and Arnaldo,  Ypiranga was represented by Dionรญsio; Dario and Ferreira; Loschiavo, Jacintho and Peres II; Ary, Hugo, Bororรณ, Peres I and Formiga.

The Initial Times And Events

On 21 March 1931, the club renovated the stands of the stadium. Then, they installed the illumination system. The club played its first late match against a combined team from the city of Santos just twenty hours later.  The club lost to its city counterpart 0โ€“1. The sole goal scorer of the match was Manoel Cruz, a midfielder from Portuguesa Santista.

A club board members, Ricardo Pinto de Oliveira, proposed to name the stadium in honor of Urbano Caldeira who died on 12 March 1933. After a meeting with all the club members, they approved his proposal. Also, after twenty-two years, they erected the first concrete stand where the current electrical scoreโ€“keeping screen is located. After they named it “A Vila Mais Famosa do Mundo” (The World’s Most Famous Village), they also called Estรกdio Urbano Caldeire, the “Alรงapรฃo da Vila (The Village Trap). This happened after the era of Os Santรกsticos (1956โ€“1973). Meanwhile, it came as a result of the opposing teams often leaving the ground defeated. The pressure the fans exerted on visiting teams was incredible due to the closeness of the stands with the field of play. The Vila Belmiro became similar with Joga Bonito after the golden age.

Stars of past and present like Pelรฉ, Coutinho, Pepe, Giovanni, Pitta, Robinho, Diego, Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso became figures for the national team in that stadium of modest dimensions.

Foot Note

Pelรฉ displayed his skills in the Vila Belmiro ,  and even scored eight goals against Botafogo(SP) On 21 November 1964. Santos beat them 11-0 in that match. The stadium also hosted Pรฉlรฉโ€™s farewell match which saw Santos beat Ponte Preta 2-0 On 2 October 1974. A tragic event overshadowed e stadiumโ€™s record attendance. Over 181 spectators suffered injuries when part of the stadium bleachers collapsed. Therefore, they abandoned the match and rescheduled it. They fixed it 10 days later. Also, they will play it in the Pacaembu.

The Developmental Phase

They shut down the stadium due to its poor condition in 1996 Campeonato Paulista. The Estรกdio Bruno Josรฉ Daniel in Santi Andrรฉ and the Pacaembu Stadium in Sรฃo Paulo, hosted Santos FC during this period. They upgraded the stadium to feature a computer-controlled drainage and irrigation systems.  On 20 July 1997, Santos inaugurated the new stadium bleachers, located behind the goal net where, today, the visiting fans are located at. They used a new illumination system, above FIFA minimum recommendation, with level of 1,200 lux during a game between Santos FC and Delia Tavano on 27 January 1998.

A Memorial das Conquistas, a place inside the stadium, that serves as the club memorial. It containing trophies, medals, documents, shirts, posters, movies and many other items that recount the club’s history. Santos FC opened it on 17 November 2003.  Also, visitors can access the team clock room, press room and the pitch, and, at the end of a tour, can buy club products in a club store inside the stadium.  In 2009, the club purchased the new electronic scoreboard. The new is much bigger than the old one. It provides the score of the game, shows materials, promotions and news of Santos and the stadium also acquired new seats. To better serve the club members, the club installed over five thousand seats. They imported the FIFA approved seats from Europe.

More Information

The Vila Belmiro hosted some 1949 Copa Amรฉrica fixtures, the 1962 Copa Libertadores final, the 1989 Copa CONMEBOL final and a 2010 Copa do Brasil final.   Current Santos President Luรญs รlvaro Ribeiro and other club directors are agreeing on building a stadium in a city nearby Santos called Cubatรฃo. The proposed 40,000 capacity stadium would host 70% of Santos’ home games and   increase the team’s revenue.
