NK Slaven Belupo

Nogometni klub Slaven Belupo, also recognized as NK Slaven Belupo, Slaven Belupo, or merely Slaven, and sometimes recognized internationally as NK Slaven Koprivnica, is a professional football team from Croatia with its base in the northern city of Koprivnica. They hold their home games at Koprivnica’s Gradski Stadion.

NK Slaven Belupo’s past

When a student squad was organized and given the name “aki nogometni klub,” which is Croatian for “Students’ Football Club,” it became the first football club in Koprivnica. The Friedrich family members created a sports club on August 20, 1912, and this date is regarded as the club’s official founding date. This is when the name Slaven first appeared. One of the Yugoslav regional championships was the Croatian championship, which the club claimed in 1920. After changing its name to HK Victorija, Slaven was dissolved 6 years afterwards because of monetary issues. Between 1926 through 1930, the city of Koprivnica was consequently without a football club.

Before the identity Slaven was reinstated with the founding of FD Slaven, the club was known as HK Koprivnica, HK Danica, and RNHK Sloga between 1930 – 1945.

They succeeded to advance to the 3rd round of the Intertoto Cup in their inaugural contest before being defeated by Czech club Sigma Olomouc upon suffering losses of 2-0 at home and a scoreless tie away. Fortunately, they replicated their success the next year before losing 3-2 on the road to elimination against illustrious English club Aston Villa.

They had even greater luck in their subsequent 2 Intertoto Cup outings, as they twice advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.
