First League TFF

The second tier of the Turkish football league structure is known as the TFF 1. Lig. After the Second Football League, the second tier of the Turkish league system from 1963 to 2001, was reorganized, the league was established in 2001 as the Turkish Second League Category A. Prior to the 2007–2008 season, the league’s name was changed to TFF First League from Türk Telekom Lig A. On January 16, 2008, the league’s name was changed to Asya Bank 1. Lig

Bank Asya stopped sponsoring the league in April 2012. According to the rules of a sponsorship agreement, the league was referred to as the PTT 1. Lig for the 2012–2016 seasons.  The league now goes by the name TFF First League once more.

The top three teams were promoted to Süper Lig prior to the 2005–06 season, while the bottom three teams were demoted to Turkish Second League Category B. The top two teams have been automatically promoted to the Süper Lig since the 2005–06 season through 2008–09; the teams placing third through sixth participated in a play-off.

While the fourth-placed squad faced the fifth-placed team, the third-placed team squared off against the sixth-placed club. The third team to be promoted was then determined by a match between the winners of the first two games. The third team in 2009–10 was chosen through play-off group games, in which the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth teams from the regular season competed in a one-game league format at a neutral site. The elimination match system returned in 2010–11, however this time it was for two matches (at home and away). Play-off status also changed during this time.
