Overview Of Alaska Gold Basketball Program
The Alaska Gold Basketball Program is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers that helps young athletes in the Anchorage, Alaska, area improve their basketball skills.

Details Of Jesse Smith
Hello, you can identify me as Jesse Smith and I’m a journalist. Due to my father’s assignment at Eielson AFB, I relocated to Alaska in 1984. (outside of Fairbanks ).
From 1985 through 1989, I represented Eielson in three different sports: volleyball, football, and basketball. Also, we beat an extremely strong ACS team and became the first basketball team in school history to win the state championship.
Then, North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro offered me a basketball scholarship. However, with only a year of college under my belt, I took off for Alaska and never looked back.
I enrolled at UAA, a local school, but I didn’t try out for any sports teams. UAA offered a tuition reimbursement program, so I took advantage of that and enrolled in classes at no cost to me.
After that, in 1996, I started working for the state of Alaska as a Public Guardian, where I was ultimately accountable for 80 persons across the state who suffered from mental illness or incapacity.
Meanwhile, during my time as a Public Guardian, I completed training to become a Master Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and I subsequently represented children in court after OCS had taken them from their homes.
Most importantly, my duty was to advocate for the kids and see to it that our efforts to reunite families succeeded.
As if that weren’t enough, I also started collaborating with our State IT team to manage critical software, data, and tech infrastructure. Therefore, I became the Department of Administration’s Microcomputer Network Specialist.
About Jesse Smith’s Kids
I have been employed by the State of Alaska for close to twenty years. During that time, I gave birth to and brought up Skyler (a boy) and Devonda (a girl).
Meanwhile, Skyler is a father and commercial fisherman based out of Kodiak, Alaska. My daughter just finished her freshman year of college in North Carolina (Brevard College).
Since I constantly immerse myself in basketball, I haven’t had any problems adjusting to life after having children move out. Here in Anchorage, I’ve been instructing young basketball players for nine years now.
However, a few of the teams I coached individually were the Anchorage Timberwolves and the Alaska Stars.
Over the years, I’ve helped countless Anchorage-area students win titles at the YES, YMCA, and Boys & Girls Club levels.
While working for Alaska Stars, I began to have a strong urge to promote Alaskan artists outside the state’s borders.
Consequently, we began organizing an annual team travel opportunity to highlight the state of Alaska’s top talent.
The cities of Seattle, Texas, Florida, and most recently Las Vegas have all seen great success with our program. The former leader of the Alaska Stars moved to Washington state in 2010.

However, we have reformed our organization under the Alaska Gold Basketball Program so that we can keep giving back to the community and preserving the opportunities that generations before us have enjoyed.
Currently, we have participants from the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th grades in our program. Our teams have been successful at younger ages because of the time and effort we have invested in preparing them to be the best they can be.
Every kid is not just an athlete, but a student-athlete, with academic and extracurricular responsibilities.
Specifically, you need a 3.0 GPA to travel and a 2.5 GPA to participate in the program.

Can you describe Alaska Gold Basketball?
Basketball is a big part of the lives of many young people in Alaska, and the Alaska Gold basketball program is a volunteer-run non-profit scheme with the express goal of helping these young people grow as basketball fans and players.
Our approach is designed to help each player improve their game in all areas over time, turning them into well-rounded contributors rather than a specialist.
We also instill in the athlete the importance of education and the necessity of striving for academic excellence above what is typically expected of them.
Our goal is to mold the player into a well-rounded young adult who can continue their education on an athletic or academic scholarship after high school.
When does the season begin and end?
This is a year-round program.
Approximately how many times a week do you have games and practices?
Two evening sessions per week are typical, and league games are typically played on Saturdays. You can schedule games for the morning, afternoon, or early evening.
The majority of teams also participate in two or three-holiday tournaments per year, some of which may feature games on Saturdays.
League games don’t always fall on the weekend. That is heavily dependent on the league’s schedule, which we have no say over.
It is possible, and even likely, that postseason contests in a variety of leagues will take place over the week.
Where is the location for training and games?
Usually, we go to the Boys and Girls Club in Mountain View for our practices.
One of the many Anchorage area middle schools may be where we need to hold practices, depending on the league.
Games may be played at Middle Schools, the local YMCA, or the Mt. View Boys & Girls Club, depending on the league.
Does the Alaska Gold Basketball Team go on tour? If yes, where does the team go?
In a word, yes. Multiple trips each year are allowed, both within and outside of Alaska (to places like Fairbanks, Wasilla, and Valdez, for example) (Washington, Chicago, California, and Nevada).
A squad consisting of the top basketball players from across the state will be put together if and when the chance to travel arises.
Just because you play in a league doesn’t mean you’ll cut the roadies.
Is it possible for my kid to continue playing Rec Basketball?
Yes. While we do have a stance on recreational leagues and player engagement, we do advocate for some players to take part in more than one league in the area.
Where does my child go from here if he tries out the program?
That is not fixed as other circumstances influence the next. Getting into this program is tough.
The program’s price tag has me worried.
What is the cost of enrolling in the program?
Rent for the gym, officials, uniforms, league dues, and tournament entry fees are all covered by the cost. The price will increase dramatically if travel is required.
Every month, at the start of the month, you will be charged $50 for the program.
