About Helsingborg IF

The Swedish professional football team Helsingborgs IF, often known as HIF (IPA: [hôif]) or Helsingborgs Idrottsförening, is based in Helsingborg. Following their play-off-based promotion in the 2021 Superettan season, they compete in the Allsvenskan, the top division in Sweden. The club, founded in 1907, has five national championships and five national cup victories to its name. Additionally, Helsingborgs IF has won the Allsvenskan twice while the Swedish championship was not contingent on the conclusion of that league.

Helsingborg was a founding member of Allsvenskan and played in the top division for all but two of the league’s seasons, from 1924 to 1968, winning the championship five times. HIF was demoted at the conclusion of the 1968 season, and although many originally anticipated a speedy comeback, they spent the next 24 seasons in the lower levels until being ultimately promoted back to the first flight in 1992. Helsingborg won the championship twice in 1999 and 2011, returning to Allsvenskan in 1993. The team stayed in the top flight until 2016.

The Sknes Fotbollförbund is the club’s parent organization.

History

Helsingborgs IF, which is not to be confused with the Stattena IF of today, was founded in 1907 as a consequence of the union of Svithiod and Stattena. On June 6, 1907, the club played its first match, defeating the local rival IFK Helsingborg 6-2. Otto Malm was the team’s top player, scoring 69 goals in only 24 games during the 1911–12 season.

He played 500 games and scored 735 goals during his stint with Helsingborgs IF. John Pettersson joined the club as president the following year, and it was during his leadership that the team won the league five times. In addition to winning the Scandinavian Championships the next year, the club changed their uniform from white shirts and blue shorts to red shirts and blue shorts. Both the Swedish Cup final and the Svenssons Cup final were losses for the club in 1914.

The club was asked to participate in the Swedish Series that year, but they rejected since they believed that friendly matches attracted more fans. Regular away games would not have been feasible since the club’s players were part-time. The club fell short against Gta in the District Championships on May 30, 1915, losing 5-4. After losing to IFK Göteborg in the championship match, the club once again placed second in the Swedish Cup in 1918.

More Information

After losing the championship match against ferocious local rivals Landskrona BoIS in August 1970, things seemed to be at their lowest point. Due to this, the competing team won the second division and eventually qualified for the Allsvenskan. Many famous players were forced to leave the team or relocate as a result. Some HIF players even relocated to Landskrona BoIS, which over the course of the next ten years became the dominant club in North-West Scania.

HIF was only able to finish fourth in the Allsvenskan in the years between 2003 and 2010, but they did win the Swedish Cup in 2007, which was Henrik Larsson’s first season back. HIF came in second place behind rival Malmö FF in 2010; however, the following year, Helsingborg won the Allsvenskan, restoring HIF’s former glory. After winning the SM-gold and additional four domestic championships, Helsingborg went on to win five straight domestic championships, including the first-ever Swedish treble, in the 2011 campaign.

After failing to defeat Halmstads BK in the two qualification matches, HIF was demoted to Swedish Superettan in 2016 and played two seasons there before returning to Allsvenskan for the 2019 campaign. HIF placed tenth in their first season back. Helsingborg hired Olof Mellberg as their coach during the current campaign, and he will guide the club in the 2020 Allsvenskan.
