Sydney FC is proud to announce the expansion of our female Academy Training Program this year. Prior to the selection of our inaugural Female Academy squads in 2022, females can train for a full year within our network.
The program runs from Term 4 through to Term 3 and is capped to a maximum number of players.

An Overview Of The School Holiday Clinic
Our School Holiday Clinic is organized in partnership with our association partners. It is run by our expert coaches who are experienced in nurturing youngsters to develop their abilities in a fun and secure environment. Game-based activities are used by our coaching staff to develop the potential of youngsters and they also get to make new friends. This clinic is a great way to develop your child’s ability and confidence while they have fun learning to play the Sky Blue Way.

How The Academy Maps Out Its Skill Training Schedule
This well-structured program organized in partnership with our association is run in different locations across Sydney each school term. Players of all abilities are assisted to improve their own four Core Skills to improve their weekly club game. Players improve individually and practice newly learned techniques in their club matches. This is due to the holistic approach used by our Coaches to develop these four skills in game situations.

The Academy On Development Level
Schedules For The Skill Acquisition Phase (SAP)
Sydney FC strongly believes the local associations or NPL arm is the best place for young players between 9-12 years of age to develop their skills weekly. As a result, the club does not run SAP or advanced programs for this age group.
The Sydney FC Academy Training Schedule
This year-long program is run across 40 weeks as a development program where players are offered an opportunity to train once weekly. While also participating in their SAP commitment in one centralized Sydney FC location. Prior to the start of the Academy from 13yrs and up, it offers these players an opportunity to train under the Sydney FC Youth philosophy. Expert coaches who work or have worked within the Sydney FC Academy run this program.
AGE GROUP: 10-13-year-old boys & 12-14-year-old girls.
ABILITY: Open to those who are currently part of SAP or Development squads at their local association or NPL club. By application and selection only.

About The Sydney FC Academy Schools Channels
In 2015, the Sydney FC Academy Schools Network began full operation under the vision, philosophy, and delivery of the Sydney FC Academy. The program is delivered by Sydney FC Academy -qualified coaches in combination with a network of high schools. It is delivered in a full-time school-year training environment.
AGE GROUP: Year 7-12 (High School Students)
ABILITY: Selections after applications and trials are based on Sydney FC and School opinion, as academic standards may also apply. In general, the application and trial process takes place in Terms 1 and 2 for students entering Year 7 the following year. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Applications by the public are not accepted by our Academy. Sydney FC finds talents by working all year round with scouts and our local associations. We try to find talents a series of years prior to the squad selections at under 13. We do not collect any applications or organize the trial process.
Sydney FC Academy’s Participation In The 2021 NPL
The Sydney FC Academy teams will participate in the U13, U14, U15, and U16 age groups in the FNSW NPL Youth Tier 1 competition. They will make use of players aged between 15 and 20 to compete in the NPL 1 U18, U20, and 1st Grade competitions.
The Screening And Selection Program
Sydney FC selects players for its academy by working with a network of scouts observing NPL 1 and 2 fixtures since the Pre-season in February. Recruitment involves a thorough and continuous process. Most of the identified players are contacted after a database of targeted players is created. The chances of Sydney FC Academy holding any trials is very slim.

About The Youth System Of Sydney FC
The youth system of Sydney FC is the Sydney Football Club Youth. It is based in Moore Park, Sydney, Australia. The Sydney Youth play consists of U23 players who compete in the highest level of youth soccer in Australia, the Y-League. (November to February.) The club’s U21 also competes in the National Premier Leagues NSW (March to August), the top competition of Football in NSW. It is a completely different team from the Sydney Youth, involving different team selection and age groups.
Also, the youth setup consists of under-20s and under-18s teams that both compete in their respective age groups in the National Premier Leagues NSW.
The Background Of The Youth Team
Early Years (2008–2009)
The youth team was founded as a Sydney FC representative team for the National Youth League (NYL) competition in 2008. Twelve contracted youth players consisted of the team, plus four overage players from the senior team allowed to play. Football superstar Adam Hett who was previously contracted by the club suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Under former Socceroo & NSL Stalwart, Steve O’Connor, Sydney FC Youth won the 2008-09 NYL Championship in its first season. The side finished the regular season on top with 13 wins, 2 draws, and just 3 losses. They dominated most games throughout the season and finished 6 points clear of second-placed Adelaide United Youth.
Sydney FC Youth further went on to defeat Adelaide United 2-0 in the Grand Final match. Ibrahim Haydar and Robbie Mileski were the goal scorers. Most Sydney FC Youth players that played in the Grand Final went on to the senior squad and recorded successes while some moved to other clubs.

They included Vedran Janjetovic, Rhyan Grant, Matt Jurman, Anthony Golec, and Brendan Gan. Sydney FC Youth was unable to retain the championship the following year after finishing fifth. As a result, they couldn’t secure qualification for the finals series due to goal difference (behind Gold Coast United FC Youth, who went on to win the Championship).
The Achievement Of The Managers (2009–2015)
Club legend Steve Corica replaced Steve O’Connor as head coach after the second season. The team had mixed success after finishing fourth with 30 points behind Gold Coast United FC Youth on 41 points. The competition did not have a final series for the first time. A few players from this team like Dimitri Petratos, Nathan Sherlock, Joel Chinese, and Blake Powell went on to play for the first team.
Corica stepped down from the head coach role to take up a more senior assistant role with the first team for the 2011-12 season. Ian Crook replaced him and led Sydney FC Youth to finish mid-table again, at sixth. The following year, Crook took over the head coach role for the senior team. Brian Dene replaced him as a coach for the Youth team.
He led the team to finish ninth place, Sydney FC Youth’s worst performance in the team’s five-year history. Many youth team players moved to play for the first team who were struggling from poor form and injuries. They included Christopher Naumoff, Hagi Gligor, Peter Triangis, and Aaron Calver.
The Return Of Steve Corica
Steve Corica then returned as head coach for Sydney FC Youth with immediate success. In the 2013-14 season, the team won the Foxtel National Youth League Championship. Corica again left to focus on his role within the senior squad after a failure to repeat this performance the following year.
Emergence Into The National Premier Leagues (2014–present)
It was confirmed that Sydney FC would compete in the NPL NSW 2 competition from the 2016 season onwards in early 2015. Football NSW recommended the youth sides of Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, and Central Coast Mariners to join the National Premier Leagues followed a competition review. An under-20 and under-18 team would also compete in their appropriate age groups, along with a team playing first grade.
Unveiled in January 2016, the team forms the top level of the Sydney FC academy. Due to the hugely increased workload of the new competition, Rob Stanton took over as head coach. Sydney FC Youth started the new National Youth League format with three consecutive victories. The team only lost twice to Newcastle Jets throughout the ten-round campaign. The team won Conference B after finishing two points clear of Newcastle to finish the regular season in the first place.
As a result, Sydney FC Youth played Adelaide United Youth for the premiership. It was a curtain-raiser to A-League Round 16 match between Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers on 23 January 2016. Sydney FC Youth won so convincingly in a 5-2 stunner.
Sydney FC Youth’s Debut In National Premier League
The team’s debut in the National Premier Leagues setup for Sydney U21 saw many influential faces return. These included Spyrakis, Timotheou, Araujo, Burgess, Lokolingoy, and Antoniou. Notable exceptions included Anthony Bouzanis, Aaron Calver, and George Blackwood as they had also signed senior contracts and were ineligible for the tournament.
They lost the debut match 2-0 to Mounties FC at home (Lambert Park). They then went on a thrilling ten-game winning streak, that included some big wins (7– 0 against Macarthur Rams and 7–4 against Bankstown Berries.) The Marconi Stallions ended the streak of Sydney FC U21 after the latter led 1–0, allowing in two goals in the last five minutes of the Round 12 clash to lose 2–1.
The Sky Blues suffered another defeat in the following game which was a “mini derby” against rivals Western Sydney Wanderers U21. A win, then a draw to Mounties FC in the Round 14 make-up game. Title hopes became shaky when they recorded two more losses meaning they picked up four points out of a possible 24. However, Sydney FC U21 later recorded wins against Bankstown City Lions FC and St George FC.

Sydney FC U21 won the Premier’s Plate after they remained undefeated in the final four rounds of the regular season. They were just two points ahead of Western Sydney Wanderers U21. The Creation Of Sydney Fc Youth Academy
Sydney FC created an academy to develop young players on 21 December 2009. The provision of technical and tactical knowledge to develop and build better players was the main goal of the academy. Also, they recruit potential new talents that could represent Sydney in the National Youth League and A-League in the future. This started a continuous commitment from Sydney to invest in and nurture talents for the benefit of grassroots soccer.
