About Olympique de Medea

Olympique de Médéa, usually known as ‘O Médéa or just OM, is a football club based in Médéa, Algeria. The club’s colors are orange and blue, and it was created in 1945. Stade Imam Lyes de Médéa, their home stadium, has a capacity of 12,000 spectators. Currently, the club competes in Algeria’s Ligue Professionnelle 1.

History

For the first time in its existence, the club reached the final of the Algerian Cup in 1995. They however went on to lose the game after scoring in the 45th minute through Kamel Djahmoune.

The team competed in the seventh Arab Cup Winners’ Cup in Amman, Jordan, in 1996. Unfortunately, they were ousted in the semi-finals by Olympique Khouribga of Morocco.

The 1996 Arab Cup Winners’ Cup was won by Olympique Khouribga, who defeated Al-Faisaly in the final. After winning the Ligue Régionale de Football de Blida group by 11 points over second-placed RC Arabâ, the team was promoted to the Ligue Inter-Régions de Football.

In the 2009–10 season, they finished fifth in the Ligue Inter-Régions de Football.

The Algerian Ligue 2, formerly known as the Ligue Professionnelle 2 and the Championnat National 2, is the country’s second-highest football league. From 2010 to 2020, it was professional.

History

When Algeria gained independence in 1962, the league was formed.

It has been presented in a variety of formats.

However he league became fully professional in 2010. The name of the league was changed to the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 2 prior to the start of the 2010 season to reflect the league’s professionalization.

The Sanctions

Origins of Algerian football (1897–1962)

The history of football in Algeria is intertwined with that of France. When football first debuted in France in 1872, it inevitably appeared in North Africa about 1894.

The first clubs were established in Oran, with the establishment of CDJ Oran (Club des Joyeuseté) on April 14, 1894. The football department of this club was founded on July 10, 1897. On September 28, 1897, the second club, CAL Oran (Club Athlétique Liberté Oranais), was created with a football department under the name Club Athlétique Liberté Oranais.

Three regional groups were involved for most teams that played in the competition last season. The championship was later dubbed the ephemeral DH, the “Honor Division”. ASM Oran were regional Champions for the Western region or West Division Honneur, after these regional championships. This was after they defeated the rival Oran on MC Oran. The Algerian Football Federation once again reorganized the championship. This was after two competitive seasons in the form of regional tournaments with a final national tournament. Meanwhile, they established a national championship to direct confrontation between the sixteen best teams of the three regional leagues in the 1964-65 season. Therefore, they referred to the results of the prior season including the first five of each of the regional leagues and more regional champions of the season.

The ASM Oran, MC Oran, ES Mostaganem, MC Saida, and JSM Tiaret were the first five teams for the Western region or League Oranie.  The ones for the center of Algiers region or League are the CR Belouizdad, NA Hussein Dey, USM Blida, MC Algiers and USM Alger. For the Eastern region or Constantine League, the previous champions USM Annaba and the other five of the ranking of this region. Exceptional Performance Of CR Belouizdad From 1965–1971

They initially called CR Belouizdad whish, CR Belcourt. They are from the district of Belcourt to Algiers. The joining of two former clubs from the same district, WRB (Widad Riadhi Belcourt) and the CAB (Club Athéltique Belcourt) created the club.

Both clubs were affiliated with the FFFA (French Football Federation Association) and LAFA (League Algiers Football Association). They competed during the

French colonial era. They won not less than four titles between 1964-1965 and 1970-1971. Also, they dominated national football in the sixties. They made two double Championship in 1964-1965—1965-1966, then during the 1968-1969—1969-1970 season. Yahia Ahmed Saadi managed them. Then, Arab Zitoun took over. The team consisted of the most outstanding players who were the pillars of the Algerian selection. Apart from those from the French colonial clubs such as Hamiti of Racing Universitaire d’Alger or Djemaâ of Gallia Sport Algiers.

They were outstanding in all competitions in both Algeria and Maghreb. Consecutively, they won three Maghreb Champions Cups. The ES Sétif Salhi of brothers, who won the 1967-68 season, and MC Oran who won his first trophy in the season 1970-71 are their two major rivals. MC Oran narrowly missed the 1968-68 season with the generation Fréha – Hadefi.  

The Club’s Top Opponents: MC Alger (5 titles) – JS Kabylie (4 titles) – (1972–1980)

Though not everything was easy, MC Algiers took over the seventies. The club was relegated for the first time in the previous season. Serious occurrence in the 1964–65 seasons against the MC Oran was partly the cause of that. However, this absence was kind of beneficial because they won five Algerian league titles on their return. It took three years for the club to regain the first division and good staff.  The team achieved this feat twice during the 1974—75 and 1975—76 seasons. They did this under the duo of Khabatou Zouba and their team.

The 1975—76 season held the most resounding achievement of this decade for this team. MC Algiers won a triple: Algeria Championship, Algerian Cup, and African Cup of Champion Clubs that season.

JS Kabylie won four league titles in Algeria in this decade and won dominance over MC Algiers. They nicknamed the team “steamroller” after consecutive victories. Also, Mouloud Iboud captained the team for nearly nine-year. In the 1972-73 and 1973-74 seasons, the club was the second after CR Belouizdad to win a double championship. They also won a double Algerian Cup –of Algerian Football Championship in the 1976-77 season. They were the first team to appoint foreign coaches after the passage of former goalkeeper of the FLN football team, Abderrahmane Boubekeur.

Frenchman Jean Lemaître (season 1970-71), and Christian Banjou (midseason 1974—75 and midseason 1975—76) managed the team. Also, Yugoslav Jouan Cestic (season 1973-74), Hungarian Andre Nagy (mid-season 1976-77), and Romanians the duo of Virgil Popescu and Peter Mândru( season 1972-73 year of the first title), then Brazil Marian (1973-74). The Polish Stefan Zywotko is the most famous of these early foreign coaches. He formed a duet that lasted about twelve years with Mahieddine Khaled at the end of this decade.

In the 1975-76 season, the Ministry of Youth and Sports held a sports reform. The aim was to empower elite clubs to structure themselves in a professional manner (ASP Sports Association Performance) by giving them a good financial base. They were to have full autonomy management with the creation of their own training center. As a result, several clubs renamed themselves after their major sponsor. MC Alger, MC Oran, and ES Sétif were renamed MP Algiers, MP Oran, and EP Sétif to promote their sponsors Promoted oil of Sonatrach.  Also, Sonelgaz , with the ‘K’ of Kahraba (gas), sponsorisa the JS Kabylie , which gave its name to JK Kabylie  in Jamiat Sari ‘ Kawkabi or the USM Alger , famous USK Algiers.  CNAN (Compagnie National Algérienne de

Navigation) with the M of Milaha (browser) that sponsors the Nasr Hussein Dey Athletic became Milaha Athletic Hussein Dey and many others more.

Just like  Mouloudia of Algiers, it will have allowed these clubs to form themselves into genuine independent sports clubs. The club evolved and continues to dominate sports competitions in other disciplines such as football. However, clubs got themselves, several sponsors, at a time and gradually reused their original names over the years.  

About Hegemony JS Kabylie (6 titles) from (1981–1990)

Algerian football recorded a good year in the eighties. Two of its national teams qualified for the World Cup and internationally performed well. The JS Kabylie  (JSK), Jeunesse Électronique de Tizi-Ouzou (JET) were outstanding nationally. JE Tizi-Ouzoud dominated Algerian football under the famous Polish duo Stefan Zywotko and Mahieddine Khalef.

They won in ten years no less than six titles of “Champion of Algeria,” and never stopped breaking records. Also, gleaning in passing three cups of Algeria and winning two titles of champion of Africa. They nicknamed them “Jumbo Jet” for their characteristic greatness and achievements.

It’s held on the championship as it reached outside of these six titles. In 1980-81 and 1987-88, they finished in second place and third place in the 1983-84 season, nine times in ten years on the podium. People tagged them “double champions” because they won these titles three times twice, i.e. by producing doubled in the league. They won it in 1981-82—1982-83 and 1984-85—1985-86, and then 1988-89—1989-1990. During the 1980-81 and 1989-1990 seasons, the JE Tizi-Ouzou made two doubled African Cup – Algerian Championship. The second came in the 1985-86 campaign. The team recorded ninety-eight points in thirty-eight matches at year-end that same season (in a championship consisting of twenty teams).

MP Oran, then the only rival of JE Tizi-Ouzou challenged then and removed its second Championship in the 1987-88 season. Therefore, qualifying for the African Cup of Champions Clubs. However, they lost the final to Moroccan club, WA Casablanca. Also, in the season 1984-85, 1986-8, and 1989-90, Mouloudia Oran finished second in the championship.

GC Mascara was another outstanding team. They were one of the few to win a championship( in the 1983-84 season) in the colonial era(since affiliated with the Lofa Oran Football League Association’)

RC Kouba finished second in the 1966-67 and 1974-75 seasons. They finally won their first championship (the only one to date) in the 1980-81 season. Also, apart from JE Tizi-Ouzou and EO Sétif they were the last team to win a championship in this decade. She won her second championship during the season 1986-86. Therefore, they competed in the African Cup of Champions Clubs. It was later won by a Nigerian side, Iwuanyanwu National.

About MC Oran (2 titles) from (1991–1999)

The national team of Algerian football recorded two major titles. The African Cup of Nations in 1990, organized its territory, and the Intercontinental Cup the following year, the late Afro-Asian Cup of Nations. As was the case in previous decades to the CR Belouizdad on MC Algiers or JS Kabylie, no uncontested leadership came up in this decade nationally.  

However, they considered MC Oran as a team beyond dispute. The “Hamroua” are the only ones to win the largest number of shares in this decade. They acquired all this in the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. They were the fourth club behind CR Belouizdad, JS Kabylie, and MC Algiers to achieve a championship double.  

MC Oran’s two league titles at this time marked a clear difference between the other competitors. Consecutively, they finished in second place in 1994-95 through to 1996-97. They also competed in the defunct Arab Cup Winners’ Cup. MC Oran chose to compete in the Arab competition after defeating USM Blida in the final of the Algerian Cup. They won the competition consecutively in 1997 and 1998, and even went ahead to win the Arab Super Cup in 1999.

One of the pioneer clubs of championship Alger, MO Constantine was one of the few to win a championship during the French colonial era(because affiliated with the LCFA the Constantine Football League Association). In the 1991-92 season, they finally won their first championship in Algeria. This was after they finished second in 1971-72 and 1973-74. In 1996-97, their rival Constantine CS Constantine won the championship.

The second club of the “Berber” ethnic group, US Chaouia after the JS Kabylie wins a championship. It was their first title. Another Algerian club, USM El Harrach won a championship in the 1997-98 season. Meanwhile, in the 1983-84 and 1991-92 seasons, they finished second. They abandoned the reform MJS (Ministry of Youth and Sports), adopted in 1976-77 during this decade. Therefore, clubs resumed their original names. In the 1997—98 season, they recognized the championship into two groups of eight teams. Also in the 1998-99 season, they reorganized it into two pools of fourteen competitors. These new changes included a “play-off” where the two leaders of these groups competed for the title of Champion. There were extensions between MC Algiers and JS Kabylie which saw the Mouloudia a goal to win zero in the 1998-99 edition. 

The Switch In Dominance Between CR Belouizdad (2 titles) USM Alger (3 titles) and JS Kabylie (2 titles)

For over two thousand years, the championship has not experienced any real domination of a certain team.  However, some teams dominated each other at intervals at a time. In this case, CR Belouizdad dominated and won championships at the beginning of this decade. Since the 1969-70 season, the league title eluded the club for nearly thirty years. Also, CR Belouizdad won two consecutive titles in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 campaigns.

ES Sétif reigned at the end of this decade after CR Belouizdad dominated at the beginning. This club won JS Kabylie twice to win the championships in the 2006-07 and 2008-09 seasons. They have not won this “champion of Algeria” title for nearly twenty-one years since the 1986-87 season. Internationally, they won two consecutive Arab Champions League in 2006-07 and 2007-08. USM Alger and JS Kabylie are other teams that stood out.

This team of USM Alger enjoyed a golden generation symbolized by one player Billel Dziri. This man led his teammates and his team to achieve a lot in this decade. They won the championship in 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-05. After CR Belouizdad, JS Kabylie, MC Algiers, and MC Oran, they were the fifth club to achieve a championship double. They will finish in second place three times during the season if they win three championships. Also (dolphin CR Belouizdad ), 2003-03 and 2005-06(dolphin JS Kabylie). In the 2002-2003 season, they won a dubbed Algerian Cup—Algerian Championship.

USM Alger dominated domestic football at this time with six titles in all competitions. JS Kabylie challenged their rule as they won three championships in 2003-04, 2005-06, and 2007-08.  However, they lost the Algerian Cup final to USM Alger in the 2003-04 season. In the 2001-02 season(CR Belouizdad), 2004-05(USM Alger), 2006-07, and 2008-09(ES Sétif) they finished second in the championship. Internationally, they won the African Cup three consecutive times. JS Kabylie somehow concentrated more on the CAF Cup. This earned them a win against Egyptian side Ismaily SC in 1999-2000. They also won consecutively two more times in 2000-01 and 2001-02 against Étoile du Sahel and Tonnerre Yaounde respectively.

JS Kabylie opposed USM Alger strongly with six titles including three international in that decade. Meanwhile, after eleven years of absence, MC Algiers won their seventh league title.
