History

Beginnings  and early years (1903–1939)

Three Basque students living in Madrid created the club as Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid on April 26, 1903. These founding members viewed the new club as a junior version of their childhood club, Athletic Bilbao, which had just won the 1903 Copa del Rey Final in their hometown. They were joined by dissident Real Madrid members in 1904.

The team started off wearing blue and white halved shirts, which were Athletic Bilbao’s colors at the time, but by 1911, both the Bilbao and Madrid teams were wearing their present red and white stripes.

Some speculate that both Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid FC used to buy Blackburn Rovers’ blue and white uniforms from the English club. Juanito Elorduy, a former player and member of Athletic Madrid’s board of directors, traveled to England in late 1909 to purchase kits for both clubs but was unable to locate Blackburn shirts; instead, he purchased Southampton’s red and white shirts.

Another theory is that the transition occurred because red and white striped tops were the most cost-effective to produce. After all, the same combination was used to make the mattress tick, and the unused fabric could simply be transformed into football shirts. Los Colchoneros, the club’s nickname, is a result of this.

Athletic won the Campeonato del Centro three times in the 1920s and finished second in the Copa del Rey in 1921, where they met parent club, Athletic Bilbao, as they did again in 1926.

As a result of their achievements, they were asked to join the Primera División of the original La Liga in 1928. Fred Pentland was the club’s manager during their first La Liga season, however, they were demoted to the Segunda División after two seasons.

After Josep Samitier took over from Pentland in the middle of the season, they were relegated again in 1936. Los Colchoneros were granted a reprieve during the Spanish Civil War, when Real Oviedo’s stadium was destroyed during airstrikes, preventing them from playing.

As a result, both La Liga and Athletic’s relegation were postponed, the latter thanks to a playoff victory over Osasuna, the Segunda División champion.

Athletic Aviación de Madrid (1939–1947)

Athletic had amalgamated with Zaragoza’s Aviación Nacional to form Athletic Aviación de Madrid by 1939, when La Liga was re-established. Members of the Spanish Air Force created Aviación Nacional in 1939. The RFEF denied them a spot in the Primera División for the 1939–1940 season. This club united with Athletic as a compromise after losing eight players to the Civil War.

Only as a replacement for Real Oviedo was the squad given a spot in the 1939–1940 La Liga season. With famous manager Ricardo Zamora in charge, the club won their first La Liga title that season and kept it the following year. In these years, the captain Germán Gómez, who was signed by Racing de Santander in 1939, was the most prominent and dynamic player. Until the 1947–1948 season, he was a member of the Rojiblancos for eight consecutive seasons. He established a renowned midfield with Machine and Ramón Gabilondo from his central midfield position.

The club was renamed Atlético Aviación de Madrid after a decision issued by Francisco Franco in 1941 prohibiting teams from adopting foreign names. The club dropped the military association from its name in 1947 and adopted the current name of Club Atlético de Madrid. Atlético Madrid defeated Real Madrid 5–0 at the Metropolitano in the same year, their biggest triumph over their cross-town rivals.

The Golden Era (1947-1965)

Atlético Madrid won La Liga in 1950 and 1951 under Helenio Herrera and with the support of Larbi Benbarek. With Herrera’s departure in 1953, the club began to fall behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, and for the rest of the 1950s, they were forced to compete with Athletic Bilbao for third place in Spain.

During the 1960s and 1970s, however, Atlético Madrid posed a serious threat to Barcelona for the status of the second team. Ferdinand Dauk took leadership of Atlético Madrid for the 1957–1958 season, leading them to second place in La Liga.

Because the winners, Real Madrid, were the incumbent European champions, Atlético qualified for the 1958–59 European Cup.

Atlético Madrid advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Drumcondra, CSKA Sofia, and Schalke 04, led by Brazilian center-forward Vavá and Enrique Collar.

In 1965, 1972, and 1976, the team won the Copa del Rey on three separate occasions. Atlético became the first team to defeat Real at the Bernabéu in eight years in 1965 when they finished second in La Liga to Real after a close title race.

Finalists in the European Cup (1965–1974)

The now-retired Adelardo was a key player during this period, as were frequent goal scorers Luis Aragonés, Javier Irureta, and José Eulogio Gárate, who won the Pichichi three times in 1969, 1970, and 1971. Atlético Madrid appointed experienced player Luis Aragonés as coach shortly after losing in the 1974 European Cup Final. After a terrible start to the season, which included six games without a win, Javier Aguirre was fired from his position as manager on 3 February 2009. He then claimed that this was not the case and that he had resigned rather than been fired. Many believed he was not the source of Atlético’s troubles, particularly player Diego Forlán, after his removal. “Dismissing Javier was the easy way out, but he was not the cause of our issues,” he remarked in support of his former manager. About RC Celta de Vigo

Real Club Celta de Vigo (Royal Celtic Club of Vigo), commonly known as Celta de Vigo or simply Celta, is a Spanish professional football club. It is  based in Vigo, Galicia and  competes in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football. Following the fusion of two Vigo-based teams, the club was founded on 23 August 1923. Background

As a result of the Vigo’s  team ambitious to acquire more success nationally , R.C. Celta de Vigo was created. In the Spanish Championship, the Basque sides had been their bête noire. Fusing the two squads to develop a more stronger side at national level was the goal. A sports writer for the Faro de Vigo Manuel de Castro, also known as “Handicap”, was the standard-bearer for this unification. From 1915, he began to write about the need for a Unitarian movement. The slogan of his movement was “Todo por y para Vigo” (“All for and to Vigo”). Eventually, the managers of Real Vigo Sporting  and Real Club Fortuna de Vigo gave their support. On 22 June 1923, De Castro himself presented the motion at  assembly of the Royal Spanish Football Federation in Madrid. It was supported unanimously.

The merger was approved on 12 July 1923 at the annual general meetings (AGMs) of Vigo and Fortuna. It was held at the Odeon Theatre and in the Hotel Moderno, respectively. As it was dubbed, hence the “Team of Galicia” was created. On 10 August 1923, the members decided upon the team’s name in the last AGM of Fortuna and Vigo. Names like “Real Unión de Vigo”, “Club Galicia”, “Real Atlántic”, “Breogán” and “Real Club Olimpico” were suggested. They decided on “Real Club Celta”, an ethnic race linked to Galicia even though the latter was popular. Manuel Bárcena de Andrés, the Count of Torre Cedeira was the first president of Celta. The team, numbered 64 players in total was decided at this AGM. Key players from both Fortuna and Vigo were included and Francis Cuggy was appointed manager.

 Celta ranked a joint-best 4th (with 2003) and reached the Copa del Generalísimo Final in 1947-48. Although they lost to Sevilla FC 4-1. Pahiño a local striker scored 21 games in 22 games and clinched the Pichichi Trophy. He moved to Real Madrid the next season.

The Nickname ‘EuroCelta’ and the club’s backslide

Celta were nicknamed  “EuroCelta” by the Spanish because of their European exploits in the late 1990s and early 2000s . Including a quarter-final run defeating Liverpool 4-1 by aggregate in the 1998-99 UEFA Cup. The subsequent season, they beat Juventus 4-0 and Benfica 7-0(8-1 aggregate) to reach the last eight. Granada eliminated them in the first knockout round through penalty shoot-outs.

La Liga and Europe’s Comeback

Celta returned to La Liga after a five-year absence on 3 June 2012. They beat Espanyol 1-0 to  escape relegation on the final  day In their first season back. They finished 17^th .

In 2015-16, they finished 6^th and recorded a best result in a decade, securing qualification to the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. They achieved this feat under Eduardo Berizzo, a “EuroCelta” veteran. The shield’s colour was changed to the custom sky blue colour the following campaign.  The crest also features the red cross of Saint James which was added in 1928 like other Galician clubs like Compostela and Racing Ferrol. They removed the honorific title and crown from the club’s name and crest during the Spanish Second Republic in 1931-1936. Meanwhile, under the Spanish state, it was to returned.

The Club’s Colour

Sky blue and white is Celta’s  home colors. It was a red shirt, black shorts and blue socks initially. On an unknown date, it was changed to the present colors to represent the Galician flag.

Real Club Celta de Vigo, S.A.D. is a Sociedad anónima deportiva , a public limited sports company. Spanish-Mexican businessman Carlos Mouriño, owns it. Since May 2006 when he acquired Horacio Gómez’s 39.84% shareholding in the club, he has been the major shareholder. Through the holding company Grupo Corporativo Ges, S.L, he owns 67.9% of the club.

The club was the target of a potential 100 million euro takeover by the Chinese CITS Group in October 2016.

The Club’s Stadium

The Estadio Municipal de Balaídos, otherwise called AbancaBalaídos for sponsorship reasons, is an all-seater stadium in Vigo, Spain. The stadium accommodates a total of 29,000 spectators. Certainly, it is Celta Vigo’s Stadium.

The Erection Of The Stadium

A group of local businessmen took the first steps towards the construction of the stadium. They bought the 75,000 m² on which they built the stadium in September 1924. One of their biggest problem is the diverting of the Lagares river. They founded the Stadium de Balaídos, S.A. company two years later which would carry out the actual construction work on the new stadium. Jenaro de la Fuente was the architect.

The Induction Of Balaídos

They inaugurated Balaídos on 30 December 1928. Father Faustino Ande, the archpriest of Fragoso  blessed the stadium. Celta Vigo and Basque team, Real Union played the inaugural match. Carmen Gregorio-Espino, the daughter of former mayor Adolfo Gregorio Espino made the ceremonial kick-off. Celta Vigo won 7-0 and  Graciliano netted the stadium’s first goal.

Redevelopment Of Balaídos

In preparation for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Balaídos underwent its second large-scale renovation; They completely rebuilt the Rio stand. Then, they added the Gol end to the stadium, and redeveloped the Tribuna and Marcador stands.

Celta qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history in the 2002-03 season. Unfortunately, the Balaídos failed UEFA stadium inspection requirements to host their games. Porto’s  Estádio do Dragão was briefly decided on to host their home games. However, the local authorities paid for the necessary upgrades.

The Renovation plans

They proposed New Balaídos several times in the past decade due to the poor condition of the stadium.

2003

Then club president Horacio Gómez proposed an ambitious project for a new stadium and the surrounding area in 2003. The 95,000m² redevelopment would include a shopping centre, a hotel and sports centre. The financiers, Caixanova approved the proposal. However, Javier Riera, the director general of the nearby PSA Peugeot Citroën factory influenced local authorities to reject the offer. The reason being the increased disturbance it would cause in the region.

2015–17

Balaídos has been undergoing major renovations since 2015. To allow a closer view for spectators, they entirely reconstructed the stands. Based on expectations in 2019, the stadium’s capacity will be 31,000 after the renovation is complete. Celta still played home games in the ground during renovations.

In February, Storm damaged the roof of the stadium. As a result, La Liga had to reschedule their match as a safety measure.

Structures and facilities

Balaídos is located on the Avenida Balaídos, in the district of Coia. It occupies the block bounded by Avenida Balaídos, Rúa Val Minor, Avenida Alcalde Portanet and Rúa dos Olimpicos Galegos.

The stadium consists the: Tribuna, Río (main stand), Gol (west end) and Marcador (east end), giving a total official capacity of 29,000. In 1982, a Segunda División game against Getafe set a record attendance of 45,000.

The Tribuna Stand

Parallel to the Avenida Balaídos is the Tribuna stand. It is a two-tiered stand – the upper-tier is Tribuna alta and lower-tier is Tribuna baixa. The Tribuna stand features Celta bar, the club’s bar.

The Río Stand

This stand is the newest of the stands and is also two-tiered (built in 1981). They call the upper-tier Río alto and lower-tier, Río baixo. Also, they built the stand over the original course of the Lagares river, thus the name Río (River).

Eduardo Coudet

Eduardo Germán Coudet (born 12 September 1974), nicknamed El Chacho, is an Argentine professional football manager and player. He is RC Celta de Vigo manager.

Also, featured for the likes of Rosario Central and River Plate mainly as a right midfielder. Then, he played in Spain, Mexico and the United States.

He started his managing career with Rosario. In addition, he won the Argentine Primera División for Racing Club in the 2018-19 season. He also worked in the top leagues of Mexico, Brazil and Spain.

His Time As A Footballer

Coudet was born in Buenos Aires and spent most of his career in Rosario Central, a first division Argentinian team. However, he shortly played in La Liga with Celta Vigo and later in Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer.

From 1993 to 1995, He played alongside French-Argentine David Trezeguet in Platense from 1993 to 1995. Through his career at River Plate, he won three Argentine titles.

Coudet was one of many players to move abroad during the great Argentine depression in 2002. Then, he moved to Spanish side Celta Vigo. He said of life in his country “I can’t live any more over here. It’s terrible to experience every day with this sense of unease. You brake at a light and you don’t know if they’re going to wash your windscreen, ask for an autograph or stick a bullet through your head”. To divert attention from his wealth, he bought a cheaper car.

However, Coudet returned to Argentina in January 2010 to play for Colon de Santa Fe after playing several years in Mexico.

In July 2010, he joined Philadelphia Union after being a trialist for them. The club released him in February 2011. Coudet signed with Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League on 28 March 2011. In a match against the Puerto Rico Islanders on 21 July, they gave Coudet a six-match ban after aggressively confronting the referee.

His Time As A Coach

Rosario Central

The club officially appointed Coudet as the new head coach of Rosario Central on 12 December 2014. He replaced Miguel Angel Russo. He selected former Argentina Ariel Garcé , who had a previous brief spell with Central as his assistant. Coudet contacted various ex-Central players on his arrival to reimburse the squad. He tried to convince the likes of Marco Ruben, Cristian Villagra (both then playing in Ukraine) and Cesar Delgado to join for the 2015 season. Also, he managed to sign midfielders José Luis Fernández and Gustavo Colman and defender Pablo Àlvarez.

Coudet surprisingly beat reigning champions Racing 1-0 in his debut. He followed the big victory with four back to back wins. Until a 2-0 away loss to River plate, his side has a 13-game undefeated run. Central followed up this win with four consecutive victories. He inflicted a fourth consecutive loss on rivals Newell in a quick bounce back. They narrowly missed out of the 2014-15 Copa Argentina after they finished 3^rd in 2015. A dubious penalty decision and an offside goal put the tie beyond reach. It was a controversial loss for the team.

Club Tijuana

Coudet signed a one-year contract, then got the job of the manager of Liga MX side Club Tijuana on 12 June 2017. His team at the Xolos comprised nine argentines. However, they dismissed him just 4 months and 18 days later.

Racing Club

They appointed Coudet as a new manager of Racing Club on 17 December 2017. His appointment aligned with new Director of Football, Diego Milito. He succeeded Diego Cocca as new manager.

Racing won the league in 2018-19, their first in five years after missing out on Copa Libertadores qualification the previous season. Coudet’s team conceded the fewest goals(15) and were the highest scorers over the 24 games (42).

Internacional

On 16 December 2019, the club appointed Coudet as manager of Brazilian Série A side Internacional . He signed a two-year deal and debuted on 23 January. He finished as runner-ups to Grebal rivals Grêmio in the State League season. On 9 November 2020, Coudet quit the club, despite managing the national league.  

Celta de Vigo

Coudet signed an 18-month contract as manager of Celta Vigo on 12 November 2020. He won his first five games recording the most goals and fewest conceded of any league manager. Thereby surpassing Óscar García, his predecessor. Along with the Galician club’s centenary, he signed a new deal until June 2024 at the end of his first season.

Third-tier opposition away in the Balearic Islands, UD Ibiza and CD Atlético Baleares eliminated Coudet’s team from the Copa del Rey in January 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Hugo Mallo Novegil

Hugo Mallo Novegil (born 22 June 1991) is a Spanish professional footballer. Also, he played as a right back and captained RC Celta de Vigo.

He achieved a club record of over 260 appearances in La Liga. In addition, he spent his entire career with Celta, making over 400 competitive appearances.

His Club Playing Time

Mallo was born in Marín, Pontevedra, Galicia. Then, he concluded his development in Celta Vigo after going through three local clubs. Also, he featured in 25 Segunda División games in his first season. This was after they enlisted him immediately into the first team. Consequently, he came on as a half-time sub for Roberto Lago in his debut on 29 August 2009. The game ended in a defeat by CD Numancia 2-1. On 3 April, again from the bench, he saw red for conceding a penalty kick with a foul on Juan Dominguez after coming on from the bench again. As a result, that was the only Real Union’s goal.

Mallo scored his debut career goal in a 2–2 draw at Villarreal CF B on 16 October 2010. In the 2011-12 season, they featured him in most matches and he started in all. Also, his side returned to the La Liga after five years after they finished second. On 18 August 2012, he made his debut in the competition  in a 0–1 defeat to Málaga CF in the Balaídos.

Mallo suffered an anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee. Also, they ruled him out from the rest of the season on 9 January 2013. It was during a Copa del Rey match against Real Madrid which ended in a 4-0 loss. On 23 May 2015, he scored his first top-flight goal in the last fixture of the season. He opened the scoring against RCD Espanyol in what ended in a 3-2 home win.

On 23 October 2016, he scored against local rivals Deportivo de la Coruña in a 4-1 victory. Also, in his debut continental campaign, he featured in a semi-finals run of the UEFA Europa League. He netted a goal in a 2-0 defeat(4-2 aggregate) of Russia’s FC Krasnodar in the second leg of the round of 16.

More Information

Mallo made his 300th competitive appearance in another local derby on 5 May 2018. This put him sixth in the clubs all-time veterans. He turned down a move to then EPL newly promoted Fulham that August. Meanwhile, he signed a new five-year contract with a buyout clause of €50 million with Celta. Also, he made his 350^th appearance in a match against Villarreal CF on 24 November 2019. He was the joint-fourth and youngest player at 28 to reach that number for Celta de Vigo.

Mallo had beaten Aleksandra Mostovoi’s record of 235 top-flight games for Celta by the Tim he turned 30 in June 2021. Julen Lopetegui named Mallo in the under-20 squad for the 2011 FIFA World Cup in Colombia. In addition, he featured in all five matches of the quarter-final run.

Then, Mallo made his first under-21 appearances in home and away wins over Georgia in European qualification in September 2011. Also, he missed the 2012 World Cup after losing his place to Montoya . The daily operations of the academy will be managed by the Asisat Oshoala Foundation, which was established in 2015. Contributing its expertise, Women Win, a global women’s fund from Amsterdam championing the rights of women and girls, will play a significant role in shaping the academy.

Academy Blueprint

The academy aspires for its graduates to channel their newfound leadership skills to uplift their communities.
