Club de Deportes Cobreloa S.A.D.P. (Spanish diction: [klu e e.po.tes ko.e.lo]) is a sports club in Cobreloa, Spain .a] Cobreloa (listen) is a Chilean football competitive team headquartered in Calama, Antofagasta, Chile. CODELCO, a Chilean state-owned corporation, was established on Jan 7, 1977, at the proposal of several local groups. The legal identity of the local club, Deportes El Loa, was used to form this club. In Calama, Chile, the ‘Club Social Deportivo Deportes El Loa’ was created on Jan 1, 1948. This group was the team’s first formal identity, and it was also the first team in Calama to have one.

In 1951, the squad was part of an affiliation with a 2nd team known as ‘Cóndor’. The team was rebranded ‘Club Deportivo y Social Sport Cóndor’ in Feb 1955.

Colours, emblems, and badges

Cobreloa’s traditional colour is orange, which, per the president, José Guerrini, was chosen to pay homage to the Netherlands National Football Team, which was immensely famous in the 1970s because of players like Johan Cruyff. Name

During a meeting of local officials in April 2014, it was agreed that the name would be picked by the mayor of Calama, Esteban Velazquez, and the Consejo de Sociedad Civil (Cososi). Arena, Pucará, Vicente Cantatore, Mario Lira, and Fernando Cornejo were mentioned as candidates.

In the end, a campaign named “Ponle Nombre al Municipal de Calama” was used to determine the name. The municipality of Calama, Chile, requested the population of Calama to offer names in a film titled ‘Corporación de Cultura y Turismo de Calama.’ Seven names were suggested at first, however, in Sept 2014, the enrollment time was prolonged.

Background

Proposal

Calama’s new stadium was first proposed in 2007 when architect Andrés Valle created a prototype of the idea, which was positively accepted by local officials. The stadium officially opened on April 18th. To complete the project, the ‘Instituto Nacional del Deporte’ provided more than CLP 200 million. The Spanish Argentine Jesús María Lires scored 20 goals to become the highest goalscorer of the team and second goalscorer of the tournament.

The Crowning Of Millonarios

Local rivals Millonarios was crowned Champions the following year as Santa Fe finished in third place, just five points behind them. 

Santa Fe took advantage of the events of El Doradosigning Argentines Héctor Rial and René Pontoni (the former became a star of Real Madrid years later), as well the Englishmen Neil Franklin and George Mountfordfrom Stoke City,  and Charlie Mitten from Manchester United, in their search for a title. However, Santa Fe still failed to achieve top three place finish for about ten years. They finished last with just five points in their worst season ever in 1954. 

Santa Fe finished first with 48 points to get it’s second title in 1958. Just two years later, they got their third with 61 points. As a result, Santa Fe became the second Colombian club to make a Copa Libertadores appearance. They placed Santa Fe in the Preliminary Round with Ecuadorian club Barcelona, in that tournament . They recorded a comfortable 3–0 victory in the first game and a 2-2 draw in the second game.

Santa Fe eliminated Bolivian club Jorge Wilstermann in the next round. Santa Fe drew 2–2 with Jorge Wilstermann on point aggregate and 3–3 on aggregate score. So, they decided the winner by a draw of lots. Santa Fe then went on to the semi-finals where they faced Brazilian club, Palmeiras. Santa Fe recorded a 2-2 draw at home but lost 4-0 away. 

The Santa Fe’s Win Over Deportivo Pasto

Santa Fe defeated Deportivo Pasto in the finals to win the Copa Colombia in the late 2000s. Afterwards, the club has recorded several successful spells. 37 years after their last league title, Santa Fe got its seventh league title in the 2012 Torneo Apertura. 

The First Stage of the tournament saw them finish in second place with 29 points. They shared a group with Boyacá Chicó, Itagüí, and La Equidad, in the Semifinals. They eventually advanced to the Finals with 14 points where they faced Deportivo Pasto. Santa Fe drew first match 1-1 and managed a 1-0 victory in the second leg.

The following year, they won their first Superliga Colombiana title and ended the 2013 Torneo Apertura as  runners-up. Atlético Nacional won the title. Santa Fe reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores. They faced Cerro Portenõ, Deportes Tolima and Real Garcilaso in the second stage of the tournament. They finished unbeaten with 14 points. Also, they advanced to the Round of 16 where they eliminated Grêmio and later Real Garcilaso in the Quarterfinals. However, Olimpia eliminated Santa Fe in the Semifinals, with an aggregate score of 2–1. 

Santa Fe was fourth on the First Stage in the 2014 Torneo Apertura. They then advanced to the Quarterfinals where they eliminated Once Caldas, with an aggregate score of 5–3. They then went on to face Atlético Nacional in the Semi-finals where they managed a 1-0 victory. However, Santa Fe were eliminated as Nacional got a comeback with a 2–0 win. Santa Fe was first with 31 points in the Torneo Finalización. 

Santa Fe shared a group with Atlético Huila, Atlético Nacional and Once Caldas in the semi-finals. They then advanced to the finals after coming out top of their group. They were pitted against Independiente Medellin in the finals. Santa Fe won their 8^th title after winning the first match and drawing the second, to finish with an aggregate score of 3–2. Also, Santa Fe lost the finals of the Copa Colombia to Deportes Tolma that same year, finishing as runners-up with an aggregate of 3-2.

Santa Fe Vs Monarcas Morelia

Santa Fe played against Monarcas Morelia in the First Stage of the 2014 Copa Libertadores, drawing 2–2 on aggregate score. Due to away goals rule, they advanced to the next round. They shared a group with Atlético Mineiro, Club Nacional and Zamora in the Second Stage. The team won only one out of six games and finished last of its group. 

Santa Fe recorded a successful start to the 2015 season by winning the 2015 Superliga Colombiana, thereby, qualifying for the 2015 Copa Sudamericana. 

However, they finished the 2015 Torneo Apertura in ninth place with 31 points and could not advance to the knockout stage. The team finished 8th with the same number of points as the last tournament in the Torneo Finalizacion. However, they advanced to the next roundthis time. The were eventually eliminated by Junior, whom also defeated them in the Copa Colombia finals months.

Santa Fe In The Copa Libertadores

Internationally, Santa Fe competed in the Copa Libertadores where they faced Atlético Mineiro, Colo-Colo and Club Atlas in the second stage. Santa Fe finished in 1^st place with 12 points. They played against Argentine team Estudiantes de La Plata in the Round of 16, losing the away match 2–1, but with a 2–0 victory at home. As a result, they advanced to the Quarterfinals where they played Brazilian club Internacional. Santa Fe managed a 1-0 win at home but recorded a 2-0 loss away.

Santa Fe’s Pioneer Contest In Copa Sudamericana

The 2015 Copa Sudamericana was Santa Fe’s first international title. The first stage saw them eliminate Ecuadorian LDU Loja and Uruguayan Nacional in the Second Stage. They eliminated Ecuadorian Emelec on away goals after drawing 2–2 on aggregate score, in the Round of 16. They recorded a 2–1 victory on aggregate to Argentine Independiente in the Quarterfinals

They advanced into the Semi-finals where they also advanced on away goals after drawing 1– 1 with Paraguayan Sportivo Lugueño. 

They played Argentine Huracán in the finals which ended in a goalless draw in both legs. Santa Fe went on to defeat them 3-1 on penalties, winning their first international title. As a result, they also qualified for the 2016 Copa Libertadores, 2016 Recopa Sudamericana and 2016 Suruga Bank Championship. The top goalscorers of the tournament spot was tied between Santa Fe’s Wilson Morelo and three other players, with five goals. 

Santa Fe finished in fourth place and advanced to the next round in the 2016 Torneo Apertura. However, Santa Fe lost to Cortuluá with an aggregate score of 2–3 and were eliminated. Meanwhile, they beat Oriented Petrolero with an aggregate of 1-6 to advance to the Second Stage In the 2016 Copa Libertadores.However, they were eliminated in the Second Stage after placing third in a group consisting of Cerro Portenõ,Cobresal (who were last) and Corinthians. 

The Club’s Identity

Ernesto Gamboa and Gonzalo Rueda designed the first badge used by Santa Fe, with a clear British influence. It highlights the combination of the red and yellow colors of the Bogotá flag to form the Holy Cross, a symbol of faith and respect, referring to the name of the club. 

The colors of the uniform has many people telling several different versions of stories about it’s origin. The most commonly accepted being that Luis Robledo, one of the founders of the Independiente Santa Fe who studied in England, was an Arsenal fan. Therefore, he gave the team the red and white, which became the symbol of the club from 1941.

Previously, the club has used other colors in its uniform.

The Football Ground Of Independiente Santa Fe

People commonly refer to the Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín as El Campín. It is the main stadium of Bogotá, Colombia. The 36,343 capacity stadium was inaugurated on 10 August 1938. Categories Promera A teams Millonarios F.C and Santa Fe use the stadium for their home games.

They named the stadium in honor of Nemesio Camacho. He is the former manager of the then-existing streetcar system of Bogotá. Also, he is the father of Luis Camacho Matiz, the person who offered the land for the construction of the stadium. The stadium stands in an area that was formerly a camping zone, hence the name Campín, which is a modification of the word “camping”. 

It entered service as a football stadium around 1946, just in time to host the first national club tournament. It hosted the 2001 Copa América which saw the defeat of Mexico 1-0. To this effect, they crowned them, champions of the American continent. Also, the stadium along with eight other stadiums hosted the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup which held in Colombia. The closing ceremony also held in the stadium.

Historical Background Of The Stadium

Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, then-mayor of Bogotá, looked to build a stadium for the pleasure of the citizens of Bogotá in 1934. He took advantage of Bogotá’s 400th anniversary event and also aimed to host the 1938 Bolivian Games.The relatively small La Merced ground remains the only major football ground in the city at the time until the opening of Estadio El Campín. Luckily, then-councilman Luis Camacho offered a land to the city of Bogotá. There, they will construct a new stadium.

The stadium had a capacity of 23,500 seats at the time of the first Colombian Professional Football championship (1948 Campeonato Profesional). In 1968, the stadium reached its highest capacity of 62,500 following several renovations. However, over time it’s capacity has decreased due to several renovations and remodelling. 

On 10 August 1938, El Campín hosted it’s first game which was a soccer match between Ecuador and Colombia where the latter lost 2-1. Since 1951, Millonarios has used the stadium as their homeground, whereas Santa Fe has played there since 1951. Several Colombian national team fixtures has been played at the El Campín, the most notable being the Copa América 2001 final against Mexico.  

Foot Note

FIFA’s decision to restrict teams from playing international football in places located above 2500 meters above sea level could have affected the stadium. However, FIFA has since allowed international FIFA games in this stadium. 

The Use Of The Stadium For Shows And Concerts

Several musical concerts held in the stadium until it’s renovation in 2005. In order to protect the grass on the field, they stopped allowing concerts and other cultural events. The Simón Bolívar Park, Palacio de los Deportes Arena, Movistar Aren,  Plaza de Toros de Santamaria, Jaime Duque Park and Corfeeiad then hosted concerts.

The Congress approved the law that requires Mayors to make stadiums available for at least a month in all Colombian cities on 15 December 2011. President Juan Manuel Santos, approved the law days later. Since 2012, the stadium was open to cultural events and concerts. As a result, since 2012, they can use the stadium again as venue for cultural events. Also, it opens the possibility for great international singers to perform in Bogotá in 2012.

Several techniques were used to manage the effect of large events on the grass of the stadium. This was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Sport and the Institute for Recreation and Sport (IDRD).Tests simulated the effects of a large crowd on the field. District stated “The first stage of the test consisted of pruning, surveying, geotechnical engineering and agronomy of 100 square meters of turf,”.

Protective devices that distributed weight and facilitated photosynthesis were also installed. 400 graduates of the police auxiliary took to the field following the installation of a stage. Under which were placed the various turf protection elements, until a density of four persons per square meter was achieved, which is the density typical of large events. The staff entered at 4:00 pm and stayed until 10:00 pm.

The Stadium’s Re-hosting Of Concerts

After a 4-year break, the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Sport confirmed that the stadium would again host concerts and cultural events on 8 March 2012. On 19 April 2012, Paul McCartney performed at the stadium during his On the Run Tour, following previous confirmation from concert producer Fernan Martinez and Bogotá Mayor (Gustavo Petro) on March 15, 2012. 

On March 27, tickets for the concert became available in TuBoleta at 4:00 p.m. Also, they already sold 75% of the tickets by 5:30 p.m. They expected the show to sell out within 24 hours. On March 27, at 4:00pm, tickets sales began and one hour and a half later they already sold 75% of the tickets.  90% of the tickets were already after a day.

On November 6,2012, over 30,546 spectators witnessed Lady Gaga perform as part of her The Born This Way Ball. On October 29, 2013, the stadium hosted Justin Bieber who performed during his Believe Tour. On 25 April 2014, british boyband One Direction performed for the very first time in Colombia at the stadium.

More Information

This was during their Where We Are Stadium Tour 2014. Concert producers were persuaded to add an extra 6,000 tickets as tickets for the show sold out in a record time. Impressively, the added tickets also sold out the first day they became available for a total of 36,386 tickets sold by December 21, 2013. The stadium has hosted Shakira for a record five times since her first tour. As a result, she holds the artist record for most events held at the stadium.

On January 31, 2015, the Food fighters performed for the first time in Colombia at the stadium. On 10 March 2016, the stadium hosted the Rolling Stones during their Olé Tour, they were also performing for the first time in Colombia. About 45,000 people witnessed the event live. 

Also, the stadium hosted U2 on their Joshua Tree Tour 2017 where they performed in Colombia forr the first time on October 7, 2017. They also recorded about 45,000 spectators. On September 17, 2022, the stadium would host Coldplay as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. The show is set to feature Camila Cabello as the opening act.

Matías Mier 

Uruguayan player Henry Matías Mier Codina was bornon 2 August 1990. Currently, he features as a left midfielder for Colombian club Independiente Medellin. 

His Pioneer Tenure In A Football Club

In 2007, Mier started his professional career at Rentistasand moved to Fénix in 2008. In December 2010, after the 2010 Apertura season, he departed the club.

His Stay In Peñarol

In January 2011, Mier joined Peñarol. He scored a crucial away goal in a Copa Libertadores semi-finals clash against Argentine side Vélez Sársfield on 3 June 2011.Peñarol advanced to the finals on away goals rule although they were defeated on the night 2–1. The aggregate score was 2–2 over after they had won the 1st leg 1–0 in Uruguay a week prior. Mier featured in both legs of the finals, where they lost to Santos 2–1 on aggregate.

His Stay In Universidad Católica

On 18 July 2011, Argentine Primera División club club Racing Club announced their interest to sign Mier for the next season. This decision was largely due to Mariano Gonzalez recommending the player to Racing manager Diego Someone. 

Mier was eventually signed on a three-year contract by Chilean Primera División club Universidad Católica just two days later on 20 July. He played there until 2014. Hewas officially presented during a press conference on 22 July. His first game in the Primera División was against Deportes Iquique. On 13 August, he scored his debut goal against Unión La Calera in a 4-0 victory.  

In November 2011, Mier won his first trophy as a professional when Universidad Católica won the 2011 Copa Chile in November 2011. They won Deportes Magallanes on penalties in the finals.

Mier transferred to Qatar Stars League club Muaither SC on 12 June 2016. However, he left having mad only 2 appearances.

Return to Peñarol

He moved back to Uruguay with Peñarol in 2017. On 28 April 2017, Mier was suspended for three matches for fighting Felipe Melon during a mass brawl, after Palmeiras beat Peñarol in the 2017 Copa Libertadores.

His Tenure In Atlético Junior

Mier joined Colombian club Atlético Junior to compete in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana, 2017 Copa Colombia and 2017 Torneo Finalizacion, in July 2017. Junior defeated Independiente Medellin 3-1 in the finals to win the Copa Colombia. Mier was featured in two matches in the knockout stages.
