Cagliari Calcio Football Club

Cagliari Calcio is a football club based in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. The club will compete in Serie B in the 2022-2023 season. The squad is currently playing home matches in the 16,416-seat Unipol Domus, which is close to their proposed new stadium location, from 2021 to 2022.

History of Cagliari Football Club

Before Serie A,

During the 1951–1952 season, Cagliari FC became the first-ever undisputed champions of Serie C; previously, the title had been divided among multiple teams. Ever since then, they spent the 1950s in Serie B, losing a promotion play-off in 1954. Cagliari’s climb from Serie C to Serie A in 1964 was spectacular after they were relegated to the lower division in the early 1960s.

First Serie A Adventure (1964–1976)

Defender Mario Martiradonna, midfielders Pierluigi Cera, Nené, and Ricciotti Greatti, and forward Gigi Riva were all part of the Rossoblu’s first-ever Serie A side. Cagliari, on the other hand, was in the last position with nine points after a terrible first half of the season. Cagliari FC finished seventh with 34 points after an incredible second half of the season that saw them overcome Juventus and Milan. Riva became Serie A’s top scorer for the first time two seasons later, while Cagliari FC had the best defensive record in the league.

Cagliari FC spent the summer of 1967 in North America as a member of a new competition known as the United Soccer Association. Teams from Europe and South America competed in this league, with each club bearing the name of a city in the United States or Canada. Cagliari FC was a member of the Chicago Mustangs, which finished second in the Western Division with 13 points, two points behind division champion and ultimately league champion Los Angeles Wolves. Roberto Boninsegna of Chicago/Cagliari was the league’s top scorer, with 10 goals in 9 of the team’s 12 games.

In 1968–1969, Cagliari, Fiorentina, and Milan formed a three-horse battle for the Serie A title. Fiorentina would win the title, but it would be the next season that they would achieve their greatest triumph. Cagliari FC won the title in 1970 with only two losses, and 11 goals conceded (the fewest in any major European league to date), with Riva as the league’s top scorer once more, thanks to the addition of Angelo Domenghini. In the 1970 World Cup final, players such as Albertosi, Niccolai, Boninsegna, Gori, Cera, Domenghini, and Riva played.

During the 1970s, the economy began to deteriorate (though were title contenders two years after their only Scudetto win). Riva’s career effectively ended that season when Cagliari FC was demoted.

Ups and Downs (1976–1987)

Cagliari FC lost a play-off for advancement the next season after relegation but returned to Serie A in 1979. Before a second relegation in 1983, players like Franco Selvaggi, Mario Brugnera (a 1970 squad survivor), and Alberto Marchetti guaranteed a good four-year tenure in the top division. With relegation to Serie C1 in 1987, the 1980s would prove to be a worse period than the previous two decades.

Back and Forth (1987–2000)

Cagliari played in Serie C1 for two seasons. It almost averted relegation from Serie C2 in the first. Claudio Ranieri took over as coach in 1988 and guided the team to two consecutive promotions, to Serie B in 1989 and Serie A in 1990. Cagliari fought their way out of relegation in their first two seasons back in Serie A, thanks to strong second-half performances. However, under Carlo Mazzone’s direction, Cagliari battled for and won a European place in the 1992–1993 season. The following season, they made their best-ever UEFA Cup run, defeating Juventus in the quarter-finals before losing 5–3 on aggregate to Internazionale, who had won the first leg 3–2 at home.

After losing a play-off to Piacenza in 1996–1997, Cagliari was relegated. They returned to Serie A after a one-year absence, although only for two seasons this time.

Once and again: 2000 Till Date

Cagliari FC remained in Serie B for the next four seasons, before winning promotion in 2003–2004 with veteran striker Gianfranco Zola, a Sardinian by birth. In the first season without Zola, the squad went through three managers before Nedo Sonetti, who was hired in November, was able to preserve the team from relegation, thanks to Honduran striker David Suazo’s great goal output.

Aside from a ninth-place performance in the 2008–2009 season, Cagliari consistently ended in the bottom half of Serie A under a succession of managers before being relegated in the 2014–2015 season. They were promoted back to Serie B the next season as champions.

After 22 years under Massimo Cellino’s leadership, the company was sold in 2014 to Tommaso Giulini, president, and owner of Fluorsid, an international chemical company. The team was relegated in the first season, but in 2016, they won Serie B and were promoted permanently to the top league, albeit always ending in the second part of the standings.

The Cagliari Calcio’s Stadium

 After winning their sole league title, Cagliari relocated from the Stadio Amsicora to the Stadio Sant’Elia in 1970. It was remodeled for Italy’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 1990, where it was used to host all of England’s group games, presumably to keep the team’s notorious hooligans on an island.

Cagliari played their final home games of 2011–2012 at the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste, on the Italian Peninsula, due to disagreements with the municipal government over the reconstruction of the publicly owned stadium. The club spent most of the following season at the Stadio Is Arenas in the neighboring municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena. The league declared it hazardous, forcing them to play behind closed doors before departing in April 2013. In 2017, the Sant’Elia was demolished to make way for a new stadium, and the club relocated to the nearby temporary Sardegna Arena.

Cagliari’s Stadio Comunale Sant’Elia was a football stadium. It is most famous for being the birthplace of Cagliari Calcio. During the 1990 FIFA World Cup, it hosted three matches. The stadium’s original capacity was 60,000 spectators, but it was lowered to 40,919 in 1990, then 23,834, and eventually 16,000 with an interim stand. It was decommissioned in 2017 and replaced with the new Unipol Domus.

Cagliari Calcio, however, offered a redesigned concept for the Karalis Arena late in 2009 to be added to the list of Euro 2016 candidates. The rebuilt stadium would hold 30,000 people and have a new Skybox, eateries, and café.

Cagliari left Stadio Sant’Elia in the closing weeks of the 2011–2012 Serie A season, playing the final three home games at Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste, due to differences with the new local administration led by mayor Massimo Zedda and mounting safety concerns about the facility. Cagliari’s home games for the 2012–2013 Serie A season were played at Stadio Comunale Is Arenas in Quartu Sant’Elena, bringing an end to the club’s long-standing relationship with Stadio Sant’Elia.

Cagliari, on the other hand, canceled their contract at Stadio Is Arenas in April 2013, citing safety concerns raised by local authorities throughout the season, forcing them to play many games behind closed doors. Cagliari’s return to the Stadio Sant’Elia for the 2013-2014 Serie A season was announced on October 19, 2013.

New Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini announced on August 1, 2014, that Stadio Sant’Elia would be expanded for the 2014-2015 Serie A season after reaching an agreement with the local municipality. By December 21, 2014, the goal was to reach 16,000 (or possibly 18,000) people (home match against Juventus).

The Provincial Supervision Committee approved the opening of Curva Sud, which has a seating capacity of 4,000 people, on October 24, 2014. When Cagliari Calcio took on AC Milan on October 29, it was projected that the stadium would hold 16,000 people.

Cagliari Calcio proposed a plan for a new stadium with a capacity of 21,000 people, shops, and a restaurant on December 18, 2015. The local council authorized the proposal on February 21, 2017, and the region approved it on March 1, 2017. Work on the new stadium began in April 2017 and is expected to be completed by 2021. Cagliari played at the temporary Sardegna Arena until the construction was finished and the name changed to Unipol Domus in 2017.

Villarreal Football Club

Villarreal Club de Fútbol, S.A.D. (Valencian: Vila-real Club de Futbol, S.A.D.), usually abbreviated to Villarreal CF or simply Villarreal, is a professional football club based in Villarreal, in Castellón in eastern Spain, that plays in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football.

Founded in 1923, the club spent much of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football and made their La Liga debut only in 1998. In the 21st century, Villarreal gained some league stability, and the club made its first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in 2005, reaching the semi-finals in 2006 and 2022. History Of The Club

1923–29: Early years

Villarreal CF was established as Club Deportivo Villarreal on 10 March 1923 “for the promotion of  all sports especially Football.” The stadium was rented for 60 pesetas a month and ticket prices were set at half a peseta for men and a quarter of a peseta for children. Women were granted free admission. On 17 June 1923, Castellón, a modern rival of the club, played the first match against a club named after Miguel de Cervantes. On 21 October of that year Villarreal played a debut match against Castellón.Villarreal began with a kit of white shirts and black shorts reflected in their first badge.

1929–98: Time in lower divisions

Villarreal entered regional competitions within the Spanish football pyramid from 1929 to 1930 onwards. The 1934–35 season the team was deprived of promotion into a higher division after they lost to Cartegen .The next season saw Villarreal win the First Division of the region before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.

After the war finished in 1939, the club played again in the Second Division of the region.However, CD Villarreal was dissolved in the early 1940s, and in 1942, CA Foghetecaz, an acronym for the club’s founders (Font, Gil, Herrero, Teuler, Catalá and Zaragoza), was one of

several clubs established in its place. In 1946, the new club joined the Valencian Football Federation and renamed itself as CAF Villarreal, where the F stood for Foghetecaz.

They changed name again to the current Villarreal CF in 1954, with a badge almost the same as to the present one.They finished seventh and then fourth twice in the First regional league before being promoted to the Tercera Liga (Third Nationwide) as champions in 1956. They faced relegation in 1960–61 after finishing 14th.

The club acquired their current badge in the middle of 1966.[4] In 1966–67, Villarreal went back to the Tercera as champions. In 1970, they reached the national Segunda for the first time.[3] After avoiding relagation in the season. They were relegated the following season. In 1975–76.They were relegated from the Tercera to the Regionals

but were promoted back again the next season. In 1986–87, Villarreal were promoted to the Segunda Liga B.[3] In 1990, they finished 18th and were relegated back to the Tercera.

There were series of promotions as the club went back to Segunda B and finished second which earned them promotion to Segunda A for the first time in their history. From 1992 to 1993, Villarreal were often in low or mid-table positions, but reached the play-offs in 1997–98 by finishing fourth.The two- legged play-off was against Compostela. Villarreal hosted the first leg which was a 0–0 draw, but the second leg at the home of the Galician team was a 1–1 draw. The the away goal rule played a part as Villarreal advanced.

1998–2012: La Liga and European debuts

Villarreal’s was promoted to la liga and played their first match against reigning European champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on 31 August 1998 where they lost 4-1 despite being in front after 3 minutes.The first home game was against Celta de Vigo the week after. Because of a difficult season, Villarreal were relegated to the Segunda División for the 1999– 2000 season, but by finishing third, they were then promoted back to the Primera División.

After finishing seventh on their return to the Primera, Villarreal finished in 15th place for two- straight seasons. Villarreal competed in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in the middle of 2002, defeating FH of Iceland, Torino of Italy, and Troyes of France. They lost in the final to compatriots Málaga, 2–1 on aggregate.

It got to the last 32 when Villarreal was defeated by the champions Zenit Saint Petersburg, losing the first leg 1–0 in Russia to a Pavel Pogrebnyak goal. The second leg was won 2–1 by Villarreal at El Madrigal, but the away goals rule helped zenit advance.

Villareal finished second in their pervious season and gained qualification into the UEFA champions league of 2008-2009. They drew Manchester United, for the second consecutive campaign, Celtic, and Aalborg BK. They made an impressive start by holding current European champions Manchester United to a goal-less draw at Old Trafford, a third 0–0 draw in a row against the English giants. A first win was sealed on 30 September by winning Gordon Strachan’s Celtic 1–0 at El Madrigal credit to Marcos Senna for a wonderful free-kick. On 21 October, during a Champions League match against Aalborg they scored six goals to three. The Spaniards went through to the knock-out stage after drawing 2–2 with Aalborg in Denmark and drawing goalless once again against Manchester United. In the last group-stage match they faced defeat to an already eliminated Celtic.

The club faced a Greek side Panathinaikos, who left Villarreal with a 1–1 away advantage despite this the Greeks were to lose 1–2 in Athens. Villarreal reached the quarter-finals for the second time in two tries, and were once again paired with Arsenal. The first leg saw a 1–1 draw by a free-kick by Marcos Senna, equalised by an Emmanuel Adebayor volley. Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Robin van Persie secured a 3–0 win for Arsenal on the return, knocking Villarreal out of the competition.

Despite finishing outside of a European qualifying spot in the domestic league, Villarreal was given a place in the qualifying round of the 2010–11 Europa League after UEFA determined that Mallorca’s financial irregularities precluded them from taking part in the tournament.

A 5–0 home win and a 2–1 away win against Dnepr Mogilev qualified them for the group stage. Villarreal suffered an early setback following a shock 2–0 loss in their away fixture against Dinamo Zagreb. Despite this, however, later wins against Dinamo, Club Brugge and PAOK saw them top their group.

After beating Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and Twente in the knockout phases, Villarreal qualified for the semi-finals to face tournament favourites Porto. After Villareal took a 0–1 lead at the Estádio do Dragão, Porto made a remarkable comeback that ended in a 5–1 defeat for Villarreal. Although Villarreal won the second leg with a 3–2 win, Porto’s first leg goal total saw them advance to the final on aggregate, where they beat Braga to be declared champions. Giuseppe Rossi finished as the tournament’s second top goalscorer with 11 goals, behind Porto’s Radamel Falcao.

2012–present: Relegation and European glory

Villarreal faced relegation on may 13th 2012 after they suffered a defeat to Athletico De Madrid 

Following a horrible season, the club underwent a shattering tragedy when Manolo Preciado, appointed as Villarreal’s new manager on 6 June 2012, died of a heart attack later that day.Due to their relegation, there was a mass exodus of players at the club, with star players such as Borja Valero, Diego López, Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar leaving the side.

After one year in the Segunda División, Villarreal were promoted back to La Liga on the final day of the season after finishing the year second after champions Elche. The team began its new tenure in the top flight by winning its first three games; the winning streak ended with a tie against Real Madrid at El Madrigal, though the team was undefeated until falling to Real Betis 1–0 on the seventh matchday of the season. The Yellow Submarine finished the 2013–14 campaign in sixth, which gave them tickets into to Europa League the next season.

In 2014–15, Villarreal finished the year in sixth, enough to secure direct qualification to the Europa League group stage. In the 2015–16 season, Villarreal led La Liga for the first time during the sixth and seventh weeks, before falling to fifth place the following week. The club ended the season in 4th place and thus advanced to the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League playoff round. The club progressed to the semifinal of the Europa League, but were knocked out by Liverpool. Villarreal won the first leg 1–0, but lost 3–0 in Liverpool to lose 3–1 on aggregate.

In 2019–20, Villarreal finished fifth, earning a place in the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League. The team advanced to the 2021 UEFA Europa League Final, where the club achieved a 1–1 result after extra time and best favored Manchester United 11–10onpenalties.[14] Thiswasthefirst major continental trophy won by the team. With the win, Villarreal switched the next year’s participation from the inaugural 2021–22 Europa Conference League to the 2021–22 Champions League.

During  the 2021-22 season, Villarreal advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League after Eliminating Juventus in the round of 16 and Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, before losing 5-2 on aggregate to Liverpool

Club’s Rivalry

Villarreal has maintained a long rivalry with Castellón for geographical reasons, since both are from the province of Castellón. They also rival Valencia, since the two had been the most competitive teams of the Valencian Community; this clash is called the “Derbi de la Comunitat.

Villarreal’s biggest league win at home was by a five-goal margin, achieved on four occasions. The club recorded 5–0 home victories against Salamanca (1998–99 La Liga), Celta Vigo (2002–03 and 2016–17 La Liga), and Tenerife (2009–10 La Liga). The most goals Villarreal scored in a league game was six, in a 6–3 home win against Racing Santander during the 2003–04 La Liga season.

Club colours

The club is known for their yellow kit since 1947. As the new season approach the son of Villarreal president as of then travelled to Valencia to purchase replacements of the club’s official kit of white shirts and black shorts. When he got to the shop  he discovered that it wasn’t available anymore. He instead bought the only colour that they had that moment which happened to be yellow. The players conceded that the shirts were suitable. Although they weren’t excited on the black shorts  the president’s son travelled to Castellón and purchased a batch of white shorts. The players voted that they should be dyed blue.it was made official that the kit is the one for the club. The yellow shirts and blue shorts combination was last worn in the 2002–03 season, and the club has since sported all-yellowkits.Away colours have been navy blue.

From 2005 to 30 June 2011, “Aeroport Castello”, an airplane company sponsored the shirt . The current shirt sponsor is Pamesa, a ceramics company. From the 2016–17 season, the kit has been made by the Spanish company Joma, having previously been produced by the Chinese company Xtep and Puma of Germany, among others.

The Head Coach Of Villarreal

Unai Emery Etxegoien (born 3 November 1971) is a Spanish football manager and former player who is the head coach of La Liga club, Villarreal.

After a career spent playing mostly in Spain’s Segunda Division, Emery transitioned into coaching after retiring in 2004. He began at Loca Deportiva , where he achieved promotion to the Segunda División in his first season. He then joined Almeria , who he led to promotion to La Liga for the first time in the club’s history. He subsequently moved to Valencia, leading the team to top-three finishes. After leaving Valencia, the coach in 2013

As a professional footballer, Emery had a modest career. He mostly played in the Segunda and segunda division B, even though he made his debut in the Primera División. His first position on the pitch was inside-left.

He began his football career in the youth ranks of Real Sociedad de Fútbol. He spent five seasons between 1990 and 1995 in the Segunda División B reserve team. He only made the jump to the first team in the 1995-1996 season, under coach Salva Iriarte, in which he played very little, only 5 games in the league and 1 in the Copa del Rey, coming on as a substitute. He even scored a goal against Albacete Balompié in the league.

Unable to find a place at Real sociedad de Fútbol, Emery joined Club Deportivo Toledo, then playing in Spain’s Second Division, where he would play from 1996 to 2000 for 4 seasons. He played for Club Deportivo Toledo during those 4 seasons, making 126 league appearances and scoring 2 goals.

At the end of the 1999-2000 season, when the team was relegated to Spain’s Second Division B, Emery joined Racing Club de Ferrol, who had just been promoted to the Second Division. He also played for one season at Club Deportivo Leganés, totalling 215 appearances in his career in Spain’s Segunda División.

He joined Lorca Deportiva Club de Fútbol in 2003. During his second season at Lorca in November 2004, coach Quique Yagüe was dismissed from the club after a defeat against Asociación Deportiva Ceuta. Emery, who had been suffering from a knee injury for several months, was offered the chance to take over the team by the president of Lorca Deportiva Club de Fútbol. He accepted the offer, retired from football, and then assumed the management of the team.

Lorca and Almería

Following a serious knee injury during the 2004-2005 season, he was named coach of Lorca Deportiva CF in January 2004 by its president, who gave him the task of maintaining the club’s position in Segunda Division B, while the club was falling down the table. Within six months of his appointment, the club was promoted to the Spanish second division for the first time in its history after a play-off victory over Alicante in Irun, his childhood home.

Emery then took over as coach of UD Almeria in 2006, which was still in the second division. In 2007, as with his previous club, he won promotion to the Spanish top flight in La Liga following a brilliant first season in which he finished second in the league with 80 points and had the best attack. Valencia

Emery then took over as coach of UD Almeria in 2006, which was still in the second division. In 2007, as with his previous club, he won promotion to the Spanish top flight in La Liga following a brilliant first season in which he finished second in the league with 80 points and had the best attack. The 2007-2008 season saw the Andalusian club remain in the top flight with an unexpected eighth-place finish.

Emery’s next season was promising as Valencia finished third in La Liga, which allowed the club to return to the top European level with the UEFA Champions League after a two-year absence. That season, he led his team to the quarter-finals of the Europa League against future winners Atlectico mardrid. In May 2010, he extended his contract with Valencia by one year.

Valencia finished third in the Spanish league again in the 2010-2011 season, despite the important departures of David Silva and David Villa. In September 2010 he won his first Champions League match (4-0) against Turkish club bursarpo and was knocked out a few months later in the round of 16 against German side Schalke 04.

Spartak Moscow 

Spartak Moscow president Leonid Fedun announced on 13 May 2012 that Emery would become the first team coach for the next two seasons. In November of the same year, however, he was fired after a series of poor results, including a 1-5 derby loss to Dynamo Moscow. Sevilla

In January 2013, Emery returned to Spain with sevilla fc , taking over from Míchel, who had also been sacked after a final defeat by Valencia (0-2) and a twelfth-place finish. He finished his half-season in a modest ninth place in La Liga, although he was able to secure a ticket to the Europa League, benefiting from the European exclusions of Malaga CF and Rayo Vallecano.

He also went on to win his first Europa League, having reached the semi-finals with Valencia, defeating Benfica Lisbon in the final on penalties and eliminating title favourites such as his former club Valencia and FC Porto.

During his second full season at the club in 2014-2015, he placed Sevilla at the top level of Spanish football by finishing fifth once again. He also participated in the UEFA Supercup in August, losing (0-2) to Champions League holders Real Madrid. They won their second consecutive Europa League title against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk at the end of the season, thereby confirming their good performance in Europe.

He set an all-time record by winning the competition for the third time in a row, defeating favourites Liverpool FC (1-3). As for the league, they dropped to seventh place, mainly because of a season ending with 7 defeats in 9 games. This disappointment in Spain was rectified by a Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, with Emery’s side narrowly losing in extra time. Sevilla FC announced in a statement on 12 June 2016 that Unai Emery’s contract had been terminated.

Paris Saint German 

On 28 June 2016, Emery signed a two-year deal, with the option of a third, to succeed Laurent Blanc at French quadruple-holders Paris Saint-Germain.In his first competitive match in charge, on 6 August, his side beat Lyon 4–1 in Austria to lift the Trophée des Champions.

Emery led PSG to second place in their group of the Champions League, behind Arsenal. In the first knockout round they defeated Barcelona 4–0 at the Parc des Princes, only to historically lose 6–1 in Spain and subsequently be eliminated.

On 1 April, he picked up his second honour with les Rouge-et-Bleu with a 4–1 win over title rivals Monaco in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue.[40] On 28 April 2018, Emery announced his decision to leave the Parisian club at the end of the season with a year left on his contract.[41] He was replaced by German coach Thomas Tuchel at PSG following the conclusion of the 2017– 18 season.

Arsenal FC

Arsenal FC officially signed the Spanish coach on 23 May 2018, when he succeeded Arsene Wenger. While building on the backbone of the squad led by Arsène Wenger, Emery relied on young talents such as Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to kick-start the club’s new era.

One day after a home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt (1-2) in the Europa League, Arsenal FC finally announced his departure from the club on 29 November 2019.

FK Željezničar became national winners in the 1971–72 season and qualified for the European Cup in the 1972–73 season during the socialist Yugoslavia era. The club has also placed second in the league once and competed in the Yugoslav Cup final in 1980–81. For the 1984–85 season, the club made the UEFA Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals in the 1971–72 season.

Željezničar is now Bosnia’s most accomplished football team, having earned six Bosnian titles, six Bosnian Cups, and three Bosnian Supercups. The club’s best postwar European performance was reaching the 3rd qualifying stage of the Champions League in 2002–03, where they were defeated by Newcastle United. Their main adversary is FK Sarajevo, with whom they compete in the Sarajevo derby, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most important football game.

Background

Before Independence (1921–1992)

A bunch of railway employees established the band Željezničar. Sarajevo had many football teams in the early twentieth century. Then for Željezničar, they were wealthy and supported by a variety of organizations, the majority of which were based on ethnicity: Bosniaks, Serbs, Bosnian Croats, and Bosnian Jews. Because it was a cash-strapped club, they used to host dance evenings and utilize the proceeds to purchase shoes and balls.

Money troubles were not the only issue. Some in the era saw the club’s acceptance of participants of all racial origins as a menace Hence Željezničar was inhibited in diverse manners.

Notwithstanding this, the club survived and even defeated richer opponents. The first formal game, a neutral, was played on September 17, 1921, at Kovaii, a Sarajevo hamlet, against SAK Napredak, and ended in a 1–5 loss. The following day, another match was developed, which ended in a 12–2 loss to Sarajevski K.

When World War II hit Sarajevo in 1941, all football activities were halted. Several footballers served in the resistance forces, and some were murdered as a result. Eljo was resurrected following the war and in 1946. t earned the Bosnian Republic championship, one of the seven regional leagues established to prepare players for the rebuilt Yugoslav championship, which began the following season. Željezničar would become one of the Bosnian participants in the Yugoslav top division after winning the competition. Shortly afterward, Sarajevo residents created FK Sarajevo, a club that has proven a significant nuisance to Željezničar’s supporters (dubbed “The Maniacs”) to this day.

Affair with Planini

Željezničar was found to be guilty of game rigging by the Football Association of Yugoslavia in 1964.

Hajduk Split and Trenjevka, together with Željezničar, were convicted and expelled from the First Yugoslav League. Željezničar players Ivica Osim and Mio Smajlovi were among those suspended from football for a year. While eljezniar officials, such as then-club president Nusret Mahi, were banned permanently. Over a month, it was agreed that the teams would remain in the league. However, would be docked 6 points each from Željezničar and Hajduk, and Trenjevka.

Quarter-finalists in the UEFA Cup in 1971–72

The club first competed in European competitions in the 1963 Mitropa Cup, but major tournaments had to queue until the early 1970s, when they placed second in the 1970–71 Yugoslav First League season, allowing them to compete in the 1971–72 UEFA Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time, losing to Ferencvárosi in a penalty kick.

(1992–date) After independence

Following Bosnia and Herzegovina’s freedom, a war started, and football was suspended.

The match for both Željezničar and FK Rad, which was set to take place at Stadion Grbavica on 5 April 1992 as part of Round 26 of the 1991–92 Yugoslav First League, was called off 35 mins (14:55 p.m. local time) before kick-off due to shootings around the stadium as an outcome of the 1st Sarajevo invasion.

The club’s final concluded game in the Yugoslav Championship was a 6–1 loss to Partizan in Belgrade on March 29, 1992. Players such as Mario Stani, Rade Bogdanovi, Gordan Vidovi, Suvad Katana, and several others had fled the horrors of war just days before causing the tournaments to be completed by junior teams.

Nevertheless, pursuant to a rule, all of Željezničar’s games in the second half of the 1991–92 season were ruled worthless. As the club was unable to complete the leftover games because of the conflict. With 6 victories, 4 ties, and 15 defeats in 25 matches (out of a prospective 33), the club has a goal difference of 22:42.

The stadium was directly on the front lines, and on May 7, 1992, the western side was demolished. Alongside SD Željezničar’s surrounding properties; yet, Željezničar was able to compete in the 1994–95 First League of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with home games played in Grbavica. It was not as crucial to finish 4th as it was to participate.

After the war stopped in 1995, a periodic tournament was established. With Bosniak and Croatian clubs competing first. Followed by Serb clubs a few years afterward.

Two-time league winners in the 2000s

For a significant period of time, Željezničar was the only team in the Bosnian Premier League to successfully retain their championship, winning the 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons under the leadership of Ivica Osim’s son, Amar Osim. In the early 2010s, the club had a similar run of achievements. Željezničar subsequently claimed the national cup in 2000–01, completing the double, the 1st occasion any team in Bosnia and Herzegovina had done so, as well as the Bosnian Supercup in 2001.

They finished second in the cup in the 2001–02 season. However, we’re unable to retain their Bosnian Supercup title (despite winning the league) because the competition had been disbanded. After the club finished second in the 2002–03 season, earned the 2002–03 national cup, and attained the club’s greatest European accomplishment since contending in the Bosnian Premier League, the 2002–03 Champions League 3rd qualification lap, which they did lose to Newcastle United, Amar was fired from the club in October 2003.

Annually, being the greatest Bosnian club, the club competed in European cups. The finest performance (for Bosnian club soccer since freedom) came in 2002 when eljezniar qualified for the UEFA Champions League 3rd qualifying phase after defeating Akraness and Lillestrm in earlier rounds. When Sanel Jahi was sent off in the 69th min of the second leg at St James’ Park, Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle United, led by Alan Shearer, were too powerful, earning 5–0 in total.

The match took place in the scene of 36,000 viewers from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina at Koevo Stadium, and it remains one of the most well-attended tournaments in Bosnian club football origins, despite being eclipsed by the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team’s 2–1 cordial victory over Italy in Nov 1996, which drew 40,000 audiences. Newcastle United advanced to the game’s 2nd group phase afterward in the season.

The team qualified for the UEFA Cup first round after failing to Newcastle United, however, fell to Málaga, who went on to reach the quarter-finals.

The 2010s: Three-time league winners

Željezničar regained the championship in the 2009–10 season after the comeback of Amar Osim in the summer of 2009. However, they were unable to complete the double as they lost in the final of the Bosnian cup to Borac Banja Luka on away goal rule, despite staying unbeaten. The club is unable to retain its Premier League championship the next season, ranking third. Željezničar, on the other hand, won their 4th national cup, defeating elik Zenica. In the 2011–12 season, they returned to Grbavica with their 6th domestic league championship 3 rounds before the season’s finish. Establishing numerous milestones along the road (35 matches without a defeat; twelve consecutive league victories; 3 seasons without a defeat in the Bosnian Cup).

Željezničar also earned the Bosnian cup in 2011–12. Completing their 2nd double in club existence, both under the direction of Amar Osim.

Željezničar earned their 4th cup of Bosnia & Herzegovina in the 2010–11 season.

They reached the final by defeating Široki Brijeg 3–0 in the total. In the final, they will face elik Zenica, a team from the old Yugoslav League. The first match was held at Grbavica Stadium and ended in a 1–0 victory for the home club. Željezničar prevailed 3–0 and 4–0 in total in the 2nd match, which was held at Bilino Polje Stadium.

Željezničar’s season came to an end with them being instantly qualified for the UEFA Europa League. Željezničar received a medal to commemorate its 90th anniversary.

Željezničar earned their sixth championship in the team’s history in the 2011–12 season. With 3 rounds remaining in the tournament, they have been crowned champions. They replicated their excellent cup campaign, winning the title with a score of 1–0 in total against Široki Brijeg. Since the fully integrated Bosnia and Herzegovina football tournaments began in the 2002–03 season, this was the first double for any team. Željezničar earned their seventh title in club existence, and they’re sixth in Bosnia, in the 2012–13 season, once again under the direction of Amar Osim.

Željezničar suffered a winless streak between 2013 and 2018. Failed to earn any awards while finishing second 3 times. Each time narrowly losing out on the crown.

The club’s winless streak came to a halt in May 2018, when it claimed the 2017–18 Bosnian Cup under then-manager Admir Adem.

The club failed Five league straight games from Oct-Dec 2018, the poorest run in the club’s existence. Following the fourth straight defeat, manager Milomir Odovi (who had remarkable performances with Željezničar in 2003–04 and 2015) resigned. On the 2nd of Dec, they suffered their fifth straight defeat, this time against Široki Brijeg in the final match of the first half of the season. Adin Mulaosmanovi and Ismet Tili were the caretaker managers in the match. Amar Osim returned to Željezničar on Dec 31, 2018, for the 2nd occasion in his tenure, and inked a 3 deal with the club. Željezničar failed their first match after coming back to the club against Radnik Bijeljina, making it six defeats in a streak, but they won their 2nd match against Mladost Doboj Kakanj, ending their six-game losing streak.

The 2020s: 100 years of the club

Because of the lingering COVID-19 epidemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 2019–20 Bosnian Premier League season was cut short on June 1, 2020, and Željezničar had to go for 2nd place on the standings. So although Željezničar earned 6 points from 2 rivalry games played during the league campaign, Sarajevo earned the championship.

They competed in the semi-finals of the Bosnian Cup in 2019–20, which was canceled because of the virus. The 2020–21 season got off to a promising beginning, winning 4 of their first five games. But the outbreak hampered their progress in the UEFA Europa League.

Because 5 persons from Željezničar group tested positive for COVID-19 and the entire squad was quarantined by Israeli officials, the first playoff round game between Maccabi Haifa, initially set for 27 August 2020, was being delayed. Six players had previously tested positive for Disease and had been left in Sarajevo.

The team retreated to Sarajevo before UEFA decided to hold the game on Sept 9 at Haifa’s Sammy Ofer Stadium. After being in quarantine for 9 days with little to no exercise and no competitive games since a surprise home defeat to Mladost Doboj Kakanj in the 5th round on August 21, 2020–21 Bosnian Premier League season, Željezničar journeyed again. However, did lose 1–3 (thus removed after amended regulations owing to the global epidemic). When Slikovi departed the club, Croatian manager Tomislav Ivkovi took over as manager of Željezničar on June 18, 2021.

Ivkovi was overtaken by Edis Mulali after he left the club in January 2022. FK Željezničar Stadium Grbavica Stadium (Serbo-Croatian: Stadion Grbavica / тaдион равиа) is a stadium in Grbavica, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This football ground, which includes terraces near to the field, is the home ground of FK Željezničar and one of two venues used by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national football team. The stadium can host a 13,146 seated audience, with more standing space available under the South stands (capacity up to 16,000). Dolina upova (en. Valley of Jars) is another name for Grbavica Stadium. The development of an athletic center in the Sarajevo neighborhood of Grbavica, which would later become a football-only field, began in the late 1940s.

Despite the fact that Sarajevo already had numerous football fields with bleachers and stands (such as the newly constructed Koevo Stadium), Yugoslav communist officials finally agreed to assign supplies to the building of a new multi-sport venue for use by diverse teams under the broader category of the SD Željezničar athletics society. The erection of the football field was assisted by several of the club’s followers, friends, and participants, such as a couple of Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) staff. Unlike the erection of Kosovo, which was a complex project with significant state funding and labor, the installation of Grbavica had significantly smaller laborers and hence took much longer to finish. A new field was constructed, complete with a racing track and drainage infrastructure, as well as primitive concrete bleachers.

The southern and eastern ends of the ground had concrete platforms. Whereas the western corner had timber stands salvaged from the freshly torn Marijin Dvor stadium. Grbavica originated as a multi-purpose venue, hosting cycling and sports contests in conjunction with football games.

Ultimately, it was only used for football. The pitch was formally launched on Sept 13, 1953, with a game between Željezničar and RSD ibenik in the Yugoslav 2nd League western region. Željezničar came out on top 4–1.

The 1970s: eight-year shutdown for expansions and upgrades

Extensive ground modifications, extensions, and reconstructions started in 1968, forcing the field to close for the next 8 years.

Interestingly, its major occupant FK Željezničar experienced its biggest triumph during this period, earning the Yugoslav First League title in 1971–72. While playing its home games at cross-town opponent FK Sarajevo’s Koevo Stadium. The only competitive football games served at Grbavica during this time were a few of Željezničar’s European home games, like the 1968–69 Mitropa Cup semifinal vs Sklo Union Teplice in May 1969 and the 1971–72 UEFA Cup games against Club Brugge, Bologna FC, and St Johnstone FC in the fall of 1971.

Grbavica resumed on April 25, 1976. The upgrades to the site comprised the introduction of bright lights, which required 50,000 m³ of materials. Two new practice grounds, and also new locker rooms, bathrooms, and other amenities, were installed. The first contributors were the Urasovi family.

1986: Northern stand incorporated

A decent northern terrace was completed successfully in 1986. There were intentions to redesign the entire stadium and encircle it in the style of the newly constructed north stand. However, those proposals were put on hold for the moment being. The Yugoslav national team (trained at the time by eljo icon Ivica Osim) conducted its first-ever game at the stadium in October 1987 as an outcome of the improvements. Yugoslavia defeated Northern Ireland 3–0 in a Euro 88 playoff match.

During the Bosnian War, which broke out in 1992, the stadium sustained significant structural deterioration. The stadium was situated between the first and second battle lines and was subjected to an intense battle.

Bosnian Serb forces set fire to the wooden terraces of the West Stand. It wasn’t until 1996 that a football game was held here once more. The local derby was the first game following the war, which was notable. The North Stand has a seating capacity of 5377 people.

After ten days of severe snowfall, a part of the roof over the west stand fell on Monday, Feb 13, 2012. The root problem of the roof collapse was poor care of the entire terrace and roof, where the snow had not been cleared since the first snowfall, as well as war destruction to the buildings.

The west stands housed 690 seats in 2016, whereas the south stands housed 3068 seats. In the south stand, a modern LED screen has been erected.

2017: Eastern stand appended

Task on the East stand was completed in early April 2017, with an all-seated structure substituting the whole East standing portion. The east stands have a seating size of 4650 people.

The East stand was totally sponsored by club fans and local companies.

Mix Diskerud, a midfielder for the United States, made donations to the initiative by purchasing 50 seats in the North stand and two ten-year passes in the East stand.

Past club managers and players include Amar Osim, Edin Deko, Ibrahim ehi, and Semir tili gave as well.
The project was also sponsored by regional clubs, with funds from Dinamo Zagreb.

The freshly constructed Eastern Stand was officially unveiled on April 1, 2017, when Željezničar hosted Sloboda Tuzla in the Championship Round of the 2016–17 Premier League season.

2018–2020: Pitch substitute and eastern stand roof created

A new field with a drainage network was built in May 2018. In July 2018, the replacement pitch was installed.

The new roof for the stadium’s eastern stand began installation in Dec. 2019. The building was completed in March 2020, with Željezničar performing its debut match under the roof replacement against Tuzla City on March 8, 2020.

Placement

The stadium is in the Grbavica district, beneath the anac Hill, which was once crossed by railway lines. The train would blast its horn to greet the fans as it passed across the stadium. The old railway is no more in operation today. Trolleybuses do, though, travel near the stadium. And tourists can also utilize other means of public transit to get to the stadium. The tram line is also conveniently positioned close to the Socijalno station, which is 600 m from the field.

Remarkable matches

The most famous game held at the stadium was the 1984–85 UEFA Cup semifinal return leg between Željezničar and Hungarian visitors Videoton FC from Székesfehérvár on Wednesday, April 24, 1985. Videoton had a 1–3 lead after the initial leg. But the home team fought hard in front of a loud home audience of 27,000 people and went on to win 2–0. Thanks to goals by Edin Bahti in the fifth min and Edin Uri in the 62nd min. Only a few minutes before the close, Željo still had a chance to advance to the UEFA Cup final, where it would face Real Madrid. In the 87th minute, unfortunately, a tragedy happened when Videoton’s right defender József Csuhay was left unattended and scored a 2–1 goal. Sending his team to the final and ending Željezničar’s aspirations in the harshest of ways.

Manager FK Željezničar

Edis Mulali (born October 25, 1975) is a Bosnian pro football manager and a one-time player who is now the manager of Željezničar of the Bosnian Premier League.

He is best remembered for his time with Željezničar, where he made over 300 matches in all tournaments.

Club working life

Mulali, who was born in Sarajevo, SFR Yugoslavia, made his debut with his hometown club Željezničar, with whom he earned three champions leagues, two cups, and three super cups. He appeared in 220 league matches for Željezničar and 322 matches overall. He also featured for TOK Teanj in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Mulali also featured for Uerdingen 05, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Hamm in Germany, where he earned the 2. Bundesliga. At the age of 35, he completed his career as a player with Željezničar. Capturing one of the 3 league championships he won during his tenure as club captain.

International work experience

Mulali earned his Bosnia and Herzegovina start in a friendly match against Hungary in March 1999, obtaining two caps but netting no goals. A friendly match against Jordan in March 2000 was his 2nd and final international appearance.

Managerial career

Željezničar

Mulali took up Željezničar in September 2015 for the 2015–16 season.

Željezničar led his team to an incredible 12-match winning streak in the national league, with 9 of those wins coming in a row. Along the process, the club defeated strong city rivals Sarajevo. Both at home and away for the first occasion in twelve years at Asim Ferhatovi Hase Stadium.

Mulali guided Željezničar to the Bosnian Cup semi-finals when they were defeated by Sloboda Tuzla 2–5 on the total. He was reportedly fired following a 1-1 tie with Rudar Prijedor on May 7, 2016, only one match prior to the actual season’s end.

Dečić

Mulali was appointed the new manager of Dei in the Montenegrin First League in September 2016.

By ranking fifth in the league, he achieved the greatest achievement in the existence of the club. Mulali opted to depart the club at the close of the season.

Doboj Kakanj Mladost

Mulali returned to Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2017 to take over as manager of Mladost Doboj Kakanj of the Bosnian Premier League.

Mladost was ahead in the league table after four rounds. Mladost was in sixth place before the winter break began. Mulali left the club in April 2018, approximately a month and a half before the season ended, with the club already protected from demotion. It was unclear why he left. However he was claimed to have left as he was concerned about “events being manipulated”. Maldost was seventh in the league when Mulali left. But they ended eighth in the end.

Rudar Pljevlja

Mulali was chosen as manager of some other Montenegrin First League club, Rudar Pljevlja, on July 21, 2018.
Mulali, along with a number of other players, left the club on December 24, 2018, owing to funding difficulties the organization had been experiencing in recent months. Both parties claimed to be on friendly terms.

Titograd

Mulali was named the new manager of Titograd, some other Montenegrin team, on January 31, 2019.

He quit as Titograd manager following a setback to Zeta after barely two months in the position.

Back to Rudar Pljevlja

Mulali returned to Montenegro in July 2019, more than six months following quitting the club, and took over as manager of Rudar Pljevlja.

Mulali’s Rudar Plevlja fell 2–0 away in a league game versus Budunost Podgorica on 5 August 2019, in his first match in his 2nd term as the club’s manager. On 14 August 2019, he earned his first victory since returning to Rudar, a 0–1 away league victory over Mulali’s old team Titograd.

Back to Dei

Mulali moved back to Dei on July 21, 2020, and was named the club’s new manager. In September 2021, he departed Dei.

Back to Željezničar

Mulali was named manager for the 2nd time on Jan 7, 2022, by Željezničar. On February 25, 2022, his maiden professional match back in command of Željezničar resulted in a 2–0 away setback to Vele Mostar. Mulali won his maiden Sarajevo derby after returning as manager on March 5, 2022, defeating opponents Sarajevo.

He led Željezničar to a 3–0 triumph over Leotar on April 9, 2022, the club’s largest league victory of the season.
